The World Cup kicked off yesterday and while we’ve not forgiven the person who lied to us about Wizkid performing, we are pretty excited about Nigeria’s first match tomorrow. In case you missed it, the Super Eagles Under-23 Team has clinched its first victory at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, despite some serious glitches.
Even after Olivia the Parrot (soccer psychic) predicted a Japan win, the U-23 team beat Japan 5-4, bringing Nigeria her first win at Rio 2016.
This victory comes as a big surprise, considering the incredible amount of stress the U-23 team members went through just hours before the match.
The Nigerian sports ministry, ever so organized, somehow had the team stranded in Atlanta, USA. The team missed a flight last Friday due to a communications mix-up.
Another flight was booked for Wednesday this week, but unfortunately could not transport all the team members at once.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung while addressing the cause for the delay implied that the government was not responsible for it.
"@Ayodeji_13: Ladies and Gentlemen , Meet Solomon Dalung, United States of Nigeria"s Youth and Sports Dev. Minister. https://t.co/vUPfp4MQfD
Planning and logistics for the team is the direct responsibility of the Nigerian Football Federation, but would it hurt if the sports minister showed some concern?
Delta Airlines had to come to our rescue. General Manager, Mike Lowry, and his team prepped a plane in time for an early flight to Manaus, 6 hours before the game, FREE OF CHARGE!
The drama did not end there. A wrong National Anthem was mistakenly played before the match.
Even after that experience, Oghenekharo Etebo scored 4 goals in a single match! That was after Sadiq Umar scored a goal in the first 7 minutes of the game.
We just want to thank the Nigerian Government, especially the Honorable Minister for Sports, Solomon Dalung, for all the support they’ve shown the Dream Team VI so far.
In fact, the way our government is treating Nigerian Athletes representing us at Rio 2016 is too wonderful! Continue!
Against all odds, we see our team is ever ready. According to Team Captain Mikel Obi: “We may be tired and frustrated, but we’re all still together and ready to win gold in Rio.”
Nigerian Athletes, please continue with the good work o! We wish you all another amazing Atlanta ’96 win!
Not long after they were placed at the 61st position, the team dropped nine places and are now behind countries such as Uganda and Benin Republic at the 70th position.
In spite of this, African countries such as Algeria, Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana were among the top 40 teams in the world, holding the 32nd, 35th and 36th positions respectively.
Considering how great the Super Eagles were in the past, this ranking shows how poor the team’s performance has been recently.
Something should be done about this because most of these players perform brilliantly in their international teams.
We hope the sports ministry looks into this so the Super Eagles, who once achieved FIFA’s highest ranking and won several trophies, return to their past glory.
It has been four years since Nigeria’s football legend, Rashidi Yekini passed away but his greatness on the pitch will never be forgotten.
Yekini died at 48 after a suffering from a brief illness in 2012 and was buried in Kwara state.
He scored the Super Eagle’s first ever World Cup goal at the 1994 Tournament in USA.
Even in death, he still holds the record as the highest goal scorer for the Super Eagles with 37 goals and was the first Nigerian to be voted as African Player Of The Year in 1994.
On May 4, the 4th anniversary of his death, his former colleague, Sunday Oliseh, and other Nigerians paid tribute to him on Twitter.
4 yrs ago today We lost Rashidi Yekini Nigeria's greatest legendary striker.Let's mourn but also celebrate his legacy.God bless his soul.
Legends like Rashidi Yekini should be officially recognised for their impact and influence on the country. We hope football bodies in Nigeria ensure proper recognition and celebration of Nigerian football legends.
The Nigerian Super Eagles will not participate in the 2017 AFCON tournament after their failure to qualify for the games.
Although they had several shots at qualifying, their first leg match against Egypt which resulted in a draw lowered their chances.
To add salt to injury, Chad dropped out of the game stating financial reasons and the Eagles were left with one chance: Win or Get Lost!
The Eagles faced the Egyptian Pharaohs for the second time on March 29. Unfortunately for them, the Egyptian Pharaohs came hard this time, scored the only game of the match and earned a 5 point lead.
When you realise the Nigerian Super Eagles will be missing the AFCON tournament for the second time.
The Nigerian national football team has done something. Yes, they have. They have hired this man, Carl Ikeme, this tall, cold bottle of Ribena as the new goal keeper for the national team.
If they were trying to sell more tickets to ladies, they have succeeded. Their jazzman is on blood. When your goalkeeper looks like that, you just support your country. I mean, have you seen him.
And the ladies agree with me. Yesterday, after the Nigeria’s Super Eagles tweeted from their official handle, asking Nigerians on Twitter to welcome Carl Ikeme, ladies went HAM. This is a comprehensive list of everything we think about Carl:
He’s a keeper
No not just of balls. I mean I’d totally keep him. Wouldn’t you?
If you won’t, look at him again:
Hot goalkeepers are the reason girls go to the World Cup.
Oh and when he’s not being this hot, he is a footballer who plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers as a goalkeeper. Don’t keep this to yourself, share this!
