• Flags up at the relationship racetrack! We talk a lot about relationship red flags and green flags, but what are the girlies saying about beige flags?

You’re probably asking, “What even is a beige flag?” Well, it’s your partner’s mildly annoying or baffling habit that’s still kind of cute. They’re not deal breakers, but you need your partner to do better ASAP.

Now that we’re clear what this flag means, here are a few these Nigerian women have noticed in their partners.

    Bolu*

Eating Semo. I mean where is the self love here?

    Demi*

Being so unbothered that he doesn’t ask for details when receiving info. For example:

“Him: K and A broke up.

    Me: Why?

    Him: Idk, I didn’t ask.”

    Fola*

Naming everything. Like giving their guitar, bicycle and car human names, and then they go, “I’m taking Amelia out for a ride” mid convo. Okay, you cute weirdo.

    Aisha*

Snoring. It’s not a red flag, but why can’t you breathe in silent mode when you sleep?

    Anita*

Not dressing up. Not that he has to be in suits and ties, but just not putting any effort into his looks.

    Ayo*

Chewing loudly with their mouth open.

    Zel*

Having long hair. There’s only space for one Rapunzel in this relationship.

    Rita*

Men who pee and don’t clean the seat.

    Chima*

A man who lacks awareness of his surroundings. Like if he’s on his phone while walking and ends up falling into a gutter.

    Yemi*

When they press toothpaste from the middle.

    Molawa*

Wearing trad/senator for every occasion. Is it every time? Please show some diversity.

    Dera*

If he’s always wearing sunglasses. You’re neither a criminal nor a celebrity please remove it so you can see the road.

  • As a child, Deji* watched friends and family turn his generous dad down when he fell on hard times. It changed the way he saw life.

Now, at 32, he opens up about how he’s working to break free from a scarcity mentality and accept the idea of sharing his resources.

    As told to Adeyinka

We weren’t the wealthiest family in our neighbourhood, but everyone knew us for my parents’ parties.

Every little milestone was a reason to invite family and friends for a “small get-together.” Our neighbours could always count on us for at least one free meal every month.

But, things took a turn after my dad lost his banking job in 2002. He was among the workers laid off when Savannah Bank lost its licence. Our finances took a serious hit. It all felt so sudden, that  I found myself wondering if my dad had even saved while he was employed. But I was too young to ask.

The parties were the first thing to go, and the way we ate followed–. My brother and I had to share a single piece of meat, and a sachet of milk was suddenly considered too much for one person to use. The private secondary school my parents always wanted for us also became an impossibility because they could no longer afford it. My mum was a civil servant, but her income was nowhere near my dad’s former salary.

Soon, the number of visitors to our house started to trickle down. Relatives who once showed up regularly for a good meal and a transport token stopped coming. Next, the non-stop phone calls my dad used to get reduced significantly.

After struggling and failing to find another job, my dad decided to start a business. He needed financial assistance to bump up what he had saved but when he  called on friends and family who’d benefited from him to help out, they all  suddenly “had one project to finish” or said “things were too tough.” I watched his spirit break in real time as he tried to make excuses for people he’d once prioritised over his family.

Seeing my dad go through that broke something in me.

In boarding school, I earned the nickname “akagum”—a slang for stingy people. I was unrepentantly stingy. The thought of sharing anything I’d worked to get was unbearable. If I’d gone through trouble to earn something, I felt no one else deserved it. My logic was simple: “Why should anyone who didn’t struggle with me get to share in the rewards?”

One time in SS2, I spent hours in a queue fetching water, only to have people who’d been lounging indoors all day ask me for some. I spat in the bucket and refused. They hurled insults at me nonstop, and I think I cried myself to sleep that night. I woke up the next day and carried on as usual; nothing changed.

It wasn’t until university that I started to see the consequences of my actions. Uni was harder than secondary school, and I soon realised I couldn’t navigate it alone. There were so many confusing processes, and I found myself needing help from others, something I wasn’t so keen on. I didn’t want anyone to feel entitled to ask me for anything in return.

    [ad]

    It worked for a while—until it didn’t.

As I started to form friendships, people got comfortable enough to ask me for things. You know, the sort of petty requests you’d ask of a friend, a course mate or a hostel mate. “Ade, can I borrow your course material?” or “What did you cook? Can I have some?” My default answer was always no. Sometimes, I’d reconsider, but I had to say no first; it somehow satisfied me.

If my friends noticed this trait about me, they never called me out. Instead, they adjusted, and soon, I was the one getting a lot of “I don’t have” and “No.” At first, I didn’t mind. It meant I didn’t have to feel bad for turning them down.

However, it took an incident during our final exams for them to finally confront me. A good friend, who was my seat partner, needed a pen. I had three spread out on my desk, but I didn’t respond when he called me. In my head, I thought, “What if my pen stops working next?” After the exam, my friends gave me a good tongue-lashing. I think we actually got into a heated exchange. I argued that the invigilator could have caught me if I had been seen talking. Before we parted ways, one of them said, “This attitude will drive people away from you,” and he was right.

The real impact of those words hit me during NYSC. I’d just started dating my first girlfriend, who always bought me thoughtful gifts—shirts, colognes, food — despite our 28k allowance. Honestly, I wasn’t comfortable accepting them because I knew it meant reciprocating, which I wasn’t ready for. I couldn’t justify the expense, especially since I was saving for post-NYSC life.

I was a good boyfriend in other ways, but it wasn’t enough for her. She frequently complained that I didn’t honour her love language of giving and receiving gifts, and I guess the last straw was when I refused to cover her friends’ meals at her birthday dinner, even though I could afford it.

After we broke up, I didn’t date for about two years and was upfront with prospects. During the getting-to-know-each-other phase, I’d say point blank, “I’m not a cheerful giver,” and sure as hell, the budding romance would die a natural death. Although, there was one person who seemed okay with it until it became an issue. She came over after work one day, and I only made food for myself, knowing she hadn’t eaten. My excuse? She hadn’t told me she was coming. We went our separate ways some weeks later.

My friends, they don’t even bother anymore. They’ve all marked me as the one friend who shows up empty-handed, who visits with no food of his own, and whose answer to requests is almost always no. I’ve lost some, and the ones who’ve stayed occasionally threaten to leave.

Over the years, I’ve realised that this is a trauma response to watching my dad’s struggle. It’s made me live with a scarcity mentality that doesn’t let me enjoy my own resources. As much as I’m stingy with others, I also tend to deprive myself, even though I have a good income and a decent savings cushion.

I’m working to get better. I’m teaching myself to say yes more often and be more generous. I’ll admit, Nigeria’s economic situation doesn’t make it easy—the word “no” still feels like it’s always on the tip of my tongue.

  • Every Nigerian family WhatsApp group has that one unforgettable event. Whether it’s Big Mummy London sending a chain of annoying broadcast messages or a sibling adding the entire extended family without warning, there’s always some premium gbas gbos.

We asked a few Nigerians to share the drama that’s gone down in their family group chats, and let’s just say the tea is piping hot.

    Seun*

My brothers and I had a heated football conversation in the family group chat. I saw this lengthy, senseless take and replied, “Guy, read what you wrote, does it make sense?” I dropped my phone to attend to something and returned to find my dad going off in the group. That’s when I realised he’d sent the message. I apologised, explaining it wasn’t directed at him, and he said it was fine. That night, my mum called and gave me a proper lecture about respecting your parents.

    Balikis*

While preparing for my cousin’s wedding, we created a family WhatsApp group for easy communication. The group was mostly inactive since the wedding was months away, but we’d get occasional updates about hotel reservations, the asoebi colour, and other plans.

One day, my bride-to-be cousin posted the asoebi rates and other expenses. A younger cousin felt the price was too high and tried to express her thoughts. My cousin flared up, insisting the younger cousin had no right to address her without using “Sister” or “Aunty.”

The exchange got heated, with some cousins arguing that since the bride was only a few years older, it was fine to call her by name. Most of us were in our mid to late twenties, and I agreed with them, though I didn’t voice it to my cousin. She eventually left the group and only sent updates through me after that.

    Ben*

During COVID, my mum kept sending videos and broadcasts full of false information in the family group chat, and I was getting tired. I’d casually asked her to at least read or verify things before spreading panic, but she didn’t take it seriously. Then, one day, she sent a video claiming people should take salt baths to prevent COVID.

I was pissed because she was acting like someone with no education. I sent a voice note trying to respectfully correct her, but she didn’t appreciate my tone. After listening, she replied, “Why not go to the market, buy a cane, and come beat me? Then you’ll know you’ve corrected me.”

I knew I’d messed up. I spent the next few days apologising, explaining I wasn’t trying to be rude. She still sends annoying videos, but I’ve muted the group chat.

    Tayo*

My stepbrother tried to play peacemaker by adding all 12 step-siblings to a WhatsApp group. I knew it was a bad idea because we’d never been close, and each wife had always kept her children apart.

He created the group without discussing it with anyone beforehand, and we all found ourselves in a group called “Adedeji* Children.” Worse, he didn’t explain why the group was created or try to make introductions. After a week of silence, people started leaving. The third eldest left first, then two others, until we were down to four. I’m not sure if he even noticed what had happened. He eventually came back some weeks later asking why I left. His message is still in my unread folder.

    Ade*

My eldest brother offered to sponsor our youngest sibling’s university education. He doesn’t have a high-paying job, but he’s unmarried and could afford it. We’d been trying to secure her admission, but nothing clicked.

One day, the second-born, who recently got promoted and now earns a lot more, came to the WhatsApp group and announced she’d enrolled our sibling in a private uni. It shocked us because she hadn’t discussed it with anyone. When we tried to reason with her, she refused to back down. My eldest brother commented that she can’t boss us around because she has more money now. Then he left the group. It took a lot of begging to get him back.

    Dorathy*

One morning, my deeply spiritual sister sent a voice note to our family group, saying she’d been having visions and nightmares. She said someone in the group was working to bring us down. For context, the group includes our parents and all six siblings.

Our parents demanded to know who she was talking about, but she refused to name names, insisting we fast and pray so God could reveal the person. The group went quiet for days because no one knew how to handle the situation. Thankfully, she returned weeks later to say the evil-doer had been defeated. We all still wonder, “So, who is the witch in this family?” But no one has dared to ask.

  • Love Life is a Zikoko weekly series about love, relationships, situationships, entanglements and everything in between.

What’s your earliest memory of each other?

Amara: She came to my department with a mutual friend in 2017. I thought she stood out because of how she dressed. I honestly can’t remember what she was wearing anymore, but it’s what I took away from that first introduction. In my head, I was like, “Oh wow, this person looks interesting”.

The next time we met was at a study session in the BQ of a friend’s then-boyfriend.

Eseosa: The first time I noticed him was at the BQ. I wasn’t part of the study session because I was in a different department. But I was almost always with my friends during my free time, which was a lot because I didn’t really care about school. Anyway, my friend had a natural hair business and I helped her with it. That day, we had a few errands to run, and she needed to pick something from the BQ where they were having the study session.

We didn’t stay long, but that was the first day I properly noticed him, even though we didn’t talk.

What did you notice about him, Eseosa?

Eseosa: I mean, I thought, “Oh wow, this boy is fine,” and that was it.

    So what happened next?

Eseosa: The years passed. At least three years, if I’m correct.

    Amara: Yes.

Eseosa: At the time, I was still at university and was going through a lot. He and our mutual friend attended the same church. One day, our mutual friend came to me and said, “You’re following me to church.” I got to the church, and he was there. I was like, “This fine boy is here again.” I hadn’t developed a crush on him then; that didn’t happen until later.

    Oh

Eseosa: Thanks to my friend, I started attending their church, and we were always together. The church was small and cosy and served coffee and biscuits after service. People didn’t leave on time because the atmosphere was great for conversations, plus we had a friend who always drove us back. So, it was a thing where, after church, we all stayed back until everyone was ready to leave. And that was how we started talking.

    When was your first conversation?

Eseosa: We’d been assigned as each other’s prayer partners. You and your partner had to spend the week praying and reporting how it went to our pastor. My faith was watery, but Amara is someone who likes to finish things. One Friday, he reached out to me and said, “Guy, we have to do this prayer thing,” and then he came to my hostel afterwards.

Everywhere was crowded with people who came to see their lovers that night. While he was trying to find chairs for us, I sat on the floor. He eventually joined me and  we got into a conversation.

We yapped about different things and only remembered to pray afterwards. We became friendly after that night, and I developed a strong crush on him.

Amara: That night, we spoke about everything: her faith, our praying habits, and our individual views on aspects of spiritual life. All of my discoveries about who she was at the fundamental level happened during that conversation.

However, what struck me the most  was how she chose to sit on the floor. I have female friends, and I’ve come to realise that for most women, it takes a long time before they can become their most authentic selves around a guy, which is normal. I expected that to be the natural progression of whatever we had going on, so I was shocked when she sat on the floor. I still admire that about her to date.

Anyway, it was from the conversation that night that we became cordial. We spent the next year and a few months being cool toward each other. But we were still not “friends friends”.

Hmmm. So, when did things progress to the next level?

Amara: It was after I got out of a relationship in September 2020.

I’ve always avoided extended conversations with the opposite sex when I’m in a relationship; it’s a sort of boundary that I put in place to make sure I don’t leave room for cheating. I don’t expressly say it; I just do it.

I think she noticed that I’d relaxed my boundaries. I’d started talking to her and other women. I should be clear: I wasn’t looking for a new relationship. I was at a point where I’d let down my guard and started enjoying conversations with other women, without worrying about crossing any personal boundaries tied to an existing relationship.

One day, a conversation came up and she wanted to find out who I was interested in, seeing that I’d become single. I was like, “ Yeah, I cannot tell you that.” For me, it was partly because I wasn’t ready to build anything.

But Eseosa knows how to pester you; she’s like a bug. Eventually, she said there was someone she also liked, but she would only share the details if I revealed who I liked. It was after that I told her she was the one.

I think she was in shock for a few minutes before revealing she liked me.

Eseosa: His ex used to attend the same church as Amara and I; you could say we had a budding friendship. We were also in the same church unit, and it only made sense to befriend people you work with.

Anyway, I noticed I wasn’t really seeing his ex anymore around COVID. I reached out to her, and she said she was fine, but she didn’t tell me they’d broken up. I also noticed that he casually mentioned that she was fine when I asked him about her, but I wasn’t fine with that answer, so I pressed on until he told me they’d broken up.

I was bummed by the news because I actually liked them together, but it started to make sense why he’d become more lax. However, there were two other girls that I thought he had his eyes for. I thought if he was going to be interested in anyone, it would be with one of these people.

Then, two  months later, the conversation about who we liked happened. I truly didn’t expect he would say my name because I assumed he thought of us as just friends. I didn’t think he wanted me in that way.

That’s why I wanted him to say a name first. So if he didn’t mention my name, I’d wiggle my way of telling him mine. Imagine telling him I like him and finding out he likes someone else.

If you want to share your own Love Life story, fill out this form.

Fair. What did you guys do with this “mutual likeness”?

Eseosa: We sat on it for a bit. It was like, “Now that we are both aware, what do we do with this information?”

Amara: We were supposed to wait between three to six months before dating.

    Why?

Amara: Our pastor set a dating rule for young people in the church to achieve two goals: to ensure that people have properly processed their past relationships (before getting into a new one) and that the person you’re starting a new relationship with doesn’t feel like a rebound.

A challenge I didn’t notice, however, was the willingness of the new person you want to date to wait for you. So, I communicated this with my pastor, who waived the rule because my ex had stopped attending church.

Eseosa: I was ready for a relationship, and I’m not one to talk to one person exclusively. I was talking to him, enjoying the conversation, but there was another person I’d gone on two dates with.

I like to know the script. If I say I like you and you say it back, what are we doing with it? I don’t just “go with the flow”. So when he told me about the rule and timeline, I said it was fine, but “don’t expect me to wait for you.”

Amara: Once I was sure that we both knew what we wanted, I asked her to be my girlfriend. This happened in November 2020, two months after my previous relationship ended.

Sweet. What were the early days like?

Amara: They were amazing. I was discovering this person who is very true to herself and has a number of talents. She draws, and sings, and because of that, we got to do a lot of goofy things on video calls. Plus, she’s also the funny one in the relationship.

Eseosa: It was like love in Tokyo.

We had just come out of a pandemic and graduated from school, so we had a lot of time on our hands. We fell asleep together during phone calls and did all the mushy things you’d roll your eyes at on social media. But those days were also triggering, not in a bad way.

    Please, explain.

Eseosa: When we started dating, I was in a headspace where I was carrying some emotional baggage — personal troubles and childhood trauma.

These things had held me back in previous romantic relationships, but I was getting better and making progress. But then, do you know how people say you feel lighter when you shed bad stuff? They never mention the need to fill the vacuum you’ve created. Now, because you’ve been used to so much negativity, you want to replace it with positivity, but you don’t even know what that looks like. It’s a very weird space that triggered me a lot.

I was in a relationship where everything was so easy. With Amara, all I had to do was communicate — but I wasn’t used to that. So, I started self-sabotaging. I was convinced I’d ruin the relationship because it felt too good to be true.  On some days, I’d say I didn’t want to talk, and he’d understood.

But at some point, he called and said, “We can’t keep doing this, what really is the problem?” I told him I was scared, and when he asked if I wanted us to end, I said “No”. Eventually, I had to learn to stop being scared.

Again, the early days were great; I just never expected to be triggered by how good they were.

Amara: I acknowledge that these things happened, but they weren’t significant enough for them to be the defining memories of our relationship’s early days. From my POV, there were a lot more positives than negatives.

I should also add that one factor instrumental to the success of the first three years of our relationship was the counselling sessions with our pastor.

Eseosa: It was pretty much marriage counselling.

Wait, you attended marriage counselling while dating?

Eseosa: Our church’s structure is that once a relationship has been steady for three to six months, you present yourself to the church authorities for counselling. Couples who attend talk about a range of topics and possible scenarios that can arise in the home. The idea was that if you’re dating, it’s because you’re both working towards marriage. And the church was right — four years later, we decided to get married.

Amara: Anyway, she’d occasionally drag me to a meeting with our pastor and table a matter she felt we needed to address, especially if I had a problematic perspective about the issue.

Having a neutral third party whom we both respect offer advice and their perspective helped us see things from a different lens. It helped that we respected them, which made us consider their suggestions and figure out what works for us.

Another thing that helped was a review system we painstakingly used to find out what we’d done wrong and what we could do better.

Interesting. So, what was your first major fight about?

Eseosa: I can never forget because I broke up with him right after.

    Ah.

Eseosa: So, we were both in the same unit at church, and I was in charge of outfits. Basically, I decided how everyone appeared on Sundays.

Some people couldn’t get their stuff together and I only found out at rehearsals on  Saturday. While I was having a conversation with two people, someone barged in and was really rude to me. I didn’t know what warranted the rudeness, but I also had to excuse myself around that time to use the restroom.

When I got back, Amara and other church members already had a roundtable discussion about how I handled the situation. My grouse with Amara was, we were both leaders in the group, and I felt he could have levelled with me without the entire roundtable discussion. That felt like a pile on.

I was angrier at the fact that I tried to communicate how the person had rudely approached me while he stood watch, and he tried to dismiss my feelings. He got defensive and couldn’t see from my point of view that I was the aggrieved person. The whole thing  dragged on, and he tried to resolve it, but I didn’t like how he went about it. I texted him that night saying, “Omo, don’t do this to your next girlfriend.” In my mind, I’d clocked out of the relationship.

I’m curious, how did you take the break up, Amara?

Amara: I didn’t know she broke up with me. I just read her text as a message and didn’t interpret it as deeply as she meant it.

The thing with letting go is that I don’t remember much details, but I think that’s been our biggest fight so far. One thing that stood out from the event was that it was the one time I saw that my pastor’s ability to help me see things differently helped to keep our relationship going.

How did this experience help you manage conflicts going forward?

Amara: We now have a list of guiding rules that we bump up from time to time in light of new information, research or feedback.

One that stands out is, “Don’t bring up your issues when I’m sharing how I feel about something you’ve done”. You help to validate my grouse with you first, and you can talk about yours later.

Eseosa: The most important thing is what he mentioned.

Sometimes, we get defensive. We don’t get it right all the time, but we’re both aware of these guiding principles. Our first instinct as humans is to defend ourselves or justify what we’ve done, but these principles help us navigate the tide.

Another rule is, we must always reach a resolution. No matter how small, we can’t move forward until we resolve it.

    [ad]

You mentioned you’re getting married earlier. When did you know y’all were headed there, Eseosa?

Eseosa: I’m a very impulsive person.

A lot of big decisions I’ve made were in the moment. Thankfully I’ve not made any horrible big decisions in the past couple of years. But the “I want to marry this person” decision was very logical.

I was never marriage hungry; I was fine whether it happened or not. However, with Amara, the whole experience is positive.  He gives me room to grow, holds me accountable, calls me out on my bullshit, and he’s my safe space.

So, it was like, if I’m going to get married at this moment, this is the person.

    What about you, Amara?

Amara: I’ll say the defining moment for me was when I asked myself, “What is out there that I don’t have?” And the more I examined our relationship, the more I realised that I had everything I was looking for.

How would you say the relationship has changed you?

Amara: I used to consider myself a very patient person but relationships require a different type of patience.

There are moments in our relationship when one of us is struggling because of something the other person is doing, and you know you just have to be patient. I’ll admit, those times have demanded more from me than I ever thought I could give.

Eventually, it becomes like building a patience muscle. The more opportunities you get to be patient, the more you get better at it. I’m still learning to pause and delay my reactions to think of an outcome we’re both comfortable with.

Eseosa: I’ve learnt to be kinder to myself.

I used to be conflict-avoidant, but I’m in a relationship with someone who’s confrontational. During the early days, I’d tell him he can’t demand a response when I’m clearly agitated; that action in itself makes me breathless, almost like I’ll have a panic attack.

So, there he was learning to be patient with me, and I, on the other hand, had to get comfortable with having hard conversations. I had to accept that these conversations were necessary because you’re trying to make the relationship work.

I’ve also learnt to become comfortable about talking about my feelings. I’m very emotional but don’t like to talk about feelings because I’m used to being misunderstood. But I had to trust that if this person believes me when I say I love them, I’m obligated to share my feelings and emotions with them; that’s how they’ll feel like a part of my life.

I’ve also become a lot more patient. Amara is patient. If I can’t understand it, I dismiss it. But I’ve had to come to the headspace of being more patient with people. Basically being kinder to myself so I can be kinder to others.

How would you rate your love life?

Amara: Honestly, 10. If anyone wants to rate it lower, they’ll have to convince me where the minus one is coming from.

One of the perks of a relationship that has the ability to be everything you want it to be — your safe space, your baby, something you consider an asset — is that the relationship grows because both parties continue to grow and invest in themselves. That’s a 10/10 relationship for me.

Esosa: I’ll also say 10. I like that we’ve continued to grow over the years, and we’ve gotten to a place of understanding conflict by recognising each other’s triggers, and helping each other to overcome those triggers.

  • Dating a remote worker might seem like a dream—flexible hours, working from home, more time for cuddles, intense tluf tluf, right? But it’s not always that simple.

Between unending meetings and forgetting to eat, people who’ve dated remote workers have stories for days. We asked six of them to share their experiences.

    Hassan*

The best part about dating my babe is knowing she’s always available. My ex was a banker, and it was probably my worst dating experience in terms of availability. We could go weeks without seeing each other, and I hated that.

That experience made me appreciate my current girlfriend. She works remotely, and I love that I can pull up at her place on a Monday morning, and she’ll be in bed, taking a call. To be fair, she spends a lot of time working, but at least she’s right there in front of me.

    Jade*

My husband fully transitioned to remote work after the pandemic, and at first, it was fun because he was always at home, and we spent lots of time together.

Four years later, it’s not the same. He’s taken on a senior role, so he’s constantly on his laptop, jumping from one meeting to another or working on some urgent document. By the time he’s done, he’s always super exhausted, like he spent the entire day hawking pure water. We’ve tried to find a balance, but it hasn’t worked. Even the kids complain that daddy is always working.

    Ijeoma*

Remote workers never really get off work. Endless hours, midnight meetings because of time zone differences, and if you work a regular 9-5, your schedules constantly clash. Plus, you can’t call them on a whim because they might be on a work call.

The upside? They’re usually at home or at their preferred workspace. That’s my dream life, but I’ll try to have structure so it doesn’t feel like we’re both always working.

    Betty*

Be prepared to go on hunger strikes weekly. My boyfriend never talks about food unless I ask or when he’s starving. He’s always on his laptop, hopping from one Google Meet call to another. It’s so annoying.

I’ve stopped complaining. When I visit, I bring home-cooked meals or grab his phone to order something when I’m hungry.

    Dami*

My favourite thing about dating a remote worker is the flexibility. For example, I went on leave last month and decided to spend two weeks in Abeokuta. I didn’t want to go alone, so I asked my boyfriend, who agreed to accompany me. You can’t do that with someone who works a regular 9-5 — they’d have to plan ahead and come up with an excuse to get time off.

    Mariam*

Get ready for weird questions from nosy neighbours. When we moved to our new place, I left for work every morning before 9 a.m., while my husband worked from home. After two months, my landlady called me for a chat.

She asked if my husband didn’t have a job because it was strange that I left for work every day while he stayed home. I explained he worked from home, but she wanted to know what kind of job kept him indoors all the time. I tried to explain, but she didn’t get it. I’m sure she’s convinced he’s into internet fraud.

  • The topic of how young Nigerians navigate romantic relationships with their earnings is a minefield of hot takes. In Love Currency, we get into what relationships across income brackets look like in different cities.

How long have you been in your relationship?

My boyfriend and I have been together for 6 years.

Gist me about how you both met

We met in a market in December 2017. I was buying some things for the house when my phone battery got low, and I went to charge at a business centre in the market, and there he was — Roy was a friend of the centre’s owner. He asked for my number, I shared it and we started talking. After a few weeks, he asked me to be his girlfriend.

I’d just lost my dad — a soldier — around that time and was looking for an apartment that my family could move into. My dad’s death meant that our time living in the barracks would soon end. At the same time, I was a 200-level university student in a different state, so I wasn’t even sure that a long-distance relationship was the best thing at the time.

    What changed your mind?

It just happened. Roy and I talked regularly, and when my birthday came around in January 2018, he surprised me with a cake (I was still at home) and paid ₦6k for my hair. We hadn’t started officially dating, and I was surprised someone I’d just met was already doing so much. We started dating some weeks after that.

The long-distance relationship you were running from

Right? It was a struggle at first, especially for a new relationship. There were moments of insecurity when I wanted to know exactly who he was talking to or calling, leading to small arguments. I used to imagine different things whenever I called and he didn’t pick up for whatever reason. Like, what if he was with a girl? But he usually addressed my concerns and made me see how it was all in my imagination.

Also, I wasn’t in a great place financially. The army covered my dad’s funeral expenses and gave my mum ₦5m, but she used the money to sort school fees, accommodation, food and provide for my other siblings. The responsibilities were a lot on her, and I didn’t get a regular allowance in school.

But after I started dating Roy, he pretty much took over my financial needs. That included my ₦25k school fees — which increased to ₦45k in 2020 — and my ₦120k/year off-campus hostel rent. Then, he’d give me money to survive monthly, usually between ₦20k – ₦50k.

In 2020, when schools closed because of COVID, Roy suggested I learn a skill and paid ₦80k for me to attend baking school. He also paid ₦120k for me to take a refresher course the following year after I forgot most of the knowledge due to minimal practice. Roy literally became my sponsor from my 300 level to when I graduated in 2021.

    What was Roy’s financial situation?

I honestly don’t know. I know he worked in a bank, but I don’t think his salary or how much he has is any of my concern. He didn’t tell me how much he earned, and I didn’t think it was my place to ask.

Is it safe to assume you didn’t have money conversations?

Oh, we did. In the early days, our money conversations were mostly about how much I needed for one thing or another. But as the years progressed, it became more about him identifying and attending to my needs.

For instance, while I was still in school, I always visited him during any school break, and he always paid the ₦18k – ₦22k bus fare for my transportation to and fro school. I didn’t have to ask. He also paid for any dates we went on when I visited.

We also talk about Roy’s spending habits. He’s quite a reckless spender, and I’m always sounding a note of caution. He can just decide to buy watches and perfumes for both of us or buy me random gifts and defend it with, “If you don’t spend your money in this life, how will you spend it after?” The gifts weren’t one-sided, though. I also got him gifts — mostly Senator materials because he liked them.

But after I graduated and we moved in together in 2021, I’ve mostly limited gift-giving to special occasions like birthdays. The frequency at which Roy gave me money sort of reduced since we lived together, and I only just got my job as a customer service rep at a management firm six months ago, so money wasn’t that regular.

    What’s cohabiting like?

You mean, what WAS it like? Roy relocated to the UK for his master’s degree a year ago, so we’re back in a long-distance relationship. But while we were together, it was okay. Of course, we had issues.

Roy had a habit of going out with friends and returning at midnight, and we clashed about that several times. But we always talked through our issues, and besides that, it was mostly smooth sailing.

We had an arrangement: I stayed with Roy during the week and went home to my mum on the weekends. He handled the bills and dropped money for feeding while I cooked. He also cooked sometimes because I didn’t really like chores. When neither of us cooked, we went on dates to restaurants.

    How often were these dates?

Two or three times monthly. Roy is an extrovert, and I’m content to stay home as long as there’s light, internet, and food. But when we had to go out, it was usually restaurants, bars, lounges and outdoor games. He always paid for the dates.

I retained our two-bedroom apartment after Roy japa, and he pays the rent, which is ₦700k/year. Honestly, when he told me he was leaving Nigeria, my first reaction was, “Are you going without me? Why can’t we go together?” He’d been hinting about being tired of Nigeria since 2021, but I thought he was joking.

It became real in 2023 when he mentioned that his parents would financially support him. He left with his junior brother.

How has japa affected your relationship dynamic?

It has been really hard, and I sometimes wonder if I want to continue the relationship. It’s just that I’ve come too far to give up. We hardly have time to talk. My job doesn’t let me use my phone while on duty, and I also take on small baking jobs here and there.

In addition to schooling, Roy also works as a care worker. With both of our busy schedules, it takes a lot of determination to talk daily, but we try our best to talk before we sleep. Right now, we’re just trying to survive each day.

Is there a plan to join him soon?

We have to get married before that, and we’ve talked about considering a 2025 wedding. My biological clock is ticking, and I don’t want any more delays. Roy wants me to work for at least a year to save money first, but I don’t think I’ll leave 2025 unmarried.

Have you considered how you’ll both handle the wedding expenses?

Not really, but the cost should be split 70:30. I don’t think the man should shoulder all the expenses, but he should take the bulk, and I can support him.

That’s why I’m not really bothered if Roy wants to postpone the wedding for some more time so I can work a bit longer. I understand the importance of money in a marriage, and I don’t want to be in a position where I can’t support. However, he’ll have to pay for my relocation expenses.

So you both don’t talk about your salaries. Will this approach continue post-wedding?

Actually, he knows how much I earn. He helped me get the job, so he knows my salary. He’s always known my financial status. I just don’t ask him about his because I think it’s private to him.

However, this will change after marriage. When we’re married, I expect his finances will have to be my concern. Plus, we’ve even decided to have a joint account when we’re married. He’ll put in 70% of his income, and I’ll put in 30% of mine. That’s what we’ll use to run our household.

Interesting. How do you budget for romance in a long-distance relationship?

Since I started working, I have saved ₦100k from my salary monthly—I currently have ₦370k in my savings. I use some of it to buy stuff for my boyfriend when needed. Since he left, I’ve only gotten him a ₦120k wristwatch. That was possible because his brother came to Nigeria, and I gave him the watch to deliver.

I’m curious: What’s the most expensive gift you’ve ever gotten for each other?

In 2022, he bought me an iPhone 11 Pro and 18-inch bone-straight hair. Those should be the most expensive gifts so far. Mine is the ₦120k watch.

What’s your ideal financial future as a couple?

I just want us to be happy, to have enough money so we don’t have to worry about the little things and can enjoy peace of mind.

  • So you and your siblings have already established that your parents see y’all as the family’s black sheep. But how do you know for sure who the family’s golden child is?

We know all the signs to look out for.

    They get the biggest servings

Your parents will try to justify it by saying they need the most nutrients, especially if they’re the last born.

They always get the benefit of the doubts

With you, your parents will swear you did that shit. With them, they’ll refrain from making assumptions because there has to be a genuine reason why they did that shit.

    They’re your parents’ personal adviser

Your parents rate their opinion AF, and that’s why they’ve made them the household’s official PA. And low key, you know this because if you need your parents to do shit, you know they’re the key to making it happen.

    They run the most errands

We all know sending a child on multiple errands is the love language of Nigerian parents. So if your parents never wake you unprovoked to grab a purse that’s right beside them, you’re probably their least favourite child.

    They snitch

Your secrets are never safe because they have no issues confessing y’all’s sins, and your parents LOVE them for that shit.

    They hardly get scolded

Even if their sin is as flashy as Joseph’s coat of many colours, they’ll most likely get a bombastic side eye and a “Won’t you come and eat your food?” in rapid succession.

Their date of birth is your parents’ password

What other proof do you need if their D.O.B. is what unlocks laptops and phones or holds the key to their emails? They could have chosen any of y’all, but you know, golden child treatment and stuff.

  • As if dealing with T-Pain’s shenanigans isn’t enough pain, the association of “God, when” people went through it this year.

And they have these Nigerian couples to thank for reminding them that they’re still far from finding true love.

    Veekee James and Femi

Veekee James and Femi met through a mutual friend, and after nearly two years of dating, they decided to make a lifelong commitment. They had their traditional ceremony on February 9, followed by a grand white wedding at the Harvesters International Christian Centre the next day.

Veekee’s $30,000 diamond and pearl-encrusted wedding gown was one for the books. Nancy Isime, Toke Makinwa, and Eniola Adeoluwa, among others, were at the wedding.

    Dimma Umeh and Obinna

Beauty and lifestyle YouTuber Dimma Umeh set the internet on fire in June when she shared her wedding photos online. The influencer married her soulmate, Obinna, in a private civil ceremony in July.

“Got legally married to my lover last month. Everything was beautiful and went just as we’d hoped. It was the civil wedding of my dreams tbh, and I’m grateful to God for how perfect it was,” Dimma wrote on IG.

The couple followed up with a traditional wedding ceremony in August in Enugu.

    Davido and Chioma

Davido and Chioma had internet users running from page to page to keep up with updates from their official wedding hashtag, #CHIVIDO. The two exchanged vows on June 25 in a strictly by invitation ceremony at the Harbour Point Event Centre.

At the end of the carnival-like ceremony, the internet had just one question for the couple, “Why didn’t they get a bigger space?”

    Kunle Remi and Boluwatiwi

A together-forever might not have happened with his onscreen boo, Bimbo Ademoye, but Kunle Remi pulled a “They never me coming” on us when he married Otedola’s niece.

The Nollywood actor and his partner, Boluwatiwi, tied the knot in a stunning two-day ceremony that combined traditional and white wedding celebrations. Bimbo Ademoye, Bisola Aiyeola, and many Nollywood folks joined the couple to celebrate their union.

    Moses Bliss and Marie

Moses Bliss and his fiancée, Marie Wiseborn, tied the knot in March 2024.

The sweetest part of this union? The gospel singer released an EP, “Love Testament”, just before the wedding, and it set the perfect emotional tone for the wedding ceremony—goals for real.

    Sharon Ooja and Ugo Nwoke

Nollywood sweetheart Sharon Ooja dated her boo for two and a half months, and it was just about enough time for them to switch things up.

Sharon and Ugo tied the knot in a star-studded traditional ceremony on June 27, 2024, followed by a grand white wedding two days later. The ceremony happened a few days after #CHIVIDO.

    Priscilla and Juma Jux

Although some people thought their engagement announcement was a PR stunt, it’s safe to say the influencer and her Tanzanian boo are walking down the aisle later this year or sometime in 2024.

Priscilla’s mum, Iyabo Ojo, never misses an opportunity to remind everyone that the wedding party is coming soon. Fingers crossed!

    Taye 9ja and Toni Tones

Nigerian content creators Taye 9ja and Toni Tones had their internet fans teary-eyed after they got engaged in June. Tones returned to quote a 2022 post in which she tweeted, “I’ve met my future husband, guys. I’m going to retweet this tweet one day and quote “I knew it”…because yeah.”

They’re walking the aisle this year, and the internet in-laws are hyped AF.
