1. Best Friends in the World

Best Friends in the World began as a short film titled New Girl by Jemima Damina. After the film received widespread acclaim, she expanded the story into a full series, which is now in its second season.

The show follows Olive, a smart, Hermione Granger–type student, as she navigates life as an SS2 student in Nigeria alongside her best friends, Esther and Maria. Together, they experience the highs and lows of teenage life—breaking rules, developing crushes (including on the classic “bad boy”), falling in love, and confronting dead jokes and subtle jabs meant to make Olive feel bad for being smart.

The series captures the Nigerian secondary school experience with such rich detail that it’s sure to spark nostalgia in anyone who’s lived it.

2. Far From Home

Released in 2022, Far From Home follows Ishaya Bello (played by Mike Afolarin), a talented and ambitious teenager with big dreams of becoming a successful artist. When he hears about Wilmer Academy—a prestigious school for the wealthy offering a chance to study at the London Art Institute—he makes a desperate move. Ishaya steals from the wrong person to fund his way in.

But getting into the school is only the beginning. To keep up appearances and meet the demands of his new life, Ishaya soon finds himself caught in the dangerous world of drug dealing.

3. MTV Shuga Naija

MTV Shuga Naija is the Nigerian edition of MTV’s Pan-African drama series Shuga, set against the vibrant but chaotic backdrop of Lagos. The show follows a group of young Nigerians as they navigate love, ambition, peer pressure, and survival in a fast-paced world.

At the heart of the story are two sisters—Sophie (Dorcas Shola Fapson), a student at the University of Lagos living a flashy, mysterious lifestyle, and Princess (Sharon Ezeamaka), her younger sister who comes to visit.

During her stay, Princess begins to uncover the truth behind Sophie’s glamorous life—lavish trips, designer clothes, and access to exclusive spaces, all seemingly funded by an older, wealthy man. Drawn by the allure, Princess decides to pursue a similar relationship. But things take a dark turn when she discovers that this man is hiding a dangerous secret—one even Sophie doesn’t know about.

4. What About Us

What About Us tells the story of Kaycee (Emmanuel Nse), a Nigerian teenager with big dreams of becoming a professional basketball player—despite having a father who doesn’t believe in him.

One day, while practising alone on the court, Kaycee spots a quiet girl named Aurelia (Angel Unigwe). They don’t speak, but the moment lingers.

Everything changes after Kaycee’s team wins a local basketball tournament. He earns a scholarship to an elite school, and for the first time, his dream starts to feel real. To his surprise, Aurelia turns up again—this time as his classmate.
