Any Health Risks or Side Effects of Cloves?
Sex is a private subject for many Nigerians, and most people would rather search online than talk openly about it. If you’re here, you’re most likely curious about the benefits of cloves sexually. But deeper than that, you may be looking for something to boost your confidence, improve your performance, or bring back a level of closeness with your partner.
To give you all the details on cloves and their benefits, we spoke to Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu, a trusted health educator with over 170,000 followers on X. Nneji has also contributed to global health programs like PEPFAR.
In this guide, we’ll break down the benefits of cloves sexually. We’ll also explore common combinations people use, like cloves with milk, honey or guava leaves. If you’re seeking great sex, stamina or just knowledge, you’re in the right place.
What Are Cloves?

Cloves are dried flower buds from a tree called Syzygium aromaticum, commonly found in parts of Africa and Asia. They’ve been used for centuries in cooking, medicine, and even spiritual rituals. When ground or brewed, cloves release a warm, slightly sweet aroma that most people associate with flavour-rich meals or herbal remedies.
What Are Cloves Used For Generally?
In many Nigerian homes, you’ll find cloves used in zobo drinks, added to pepper soup, or homemade remedies passed down through generations. Cloves are known for their strong aroma and warm taste, but they’re also valued for what they’re believed to do inside the body.
Medicinally, cloves are used to relieve toothaches, reduce bloating, treat coughs, heal wounds and ease menstrual pain. Some people use them to manage blood sugar or support digestion.

Benefits of Cloves Sexually for Men
The benefits of cloves sexually for men are trusted across Nigerian communities. This is because most men are looking for the same thing: to feel more in control, more present and more confident in intimate moments.
“The effects of eugenol on sexual functions is more studied in males than in females, but generally, it boosts sexual functions in both males and females,” Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu reveals. “Eugenol boosts testosterone levels in males. One of the ways it achieves this is by reducing oxidative stress in the testes as it is rich in antioxidants. It helps relax blood vessels thereby improving blood flow. It has vasodilatory properties.”
1. Improves blood circulation
One of the key sexual benefits of cloves for men is their effect on blood flow. Cloves contain a compound called eugenol, it relaxes your blood vessels and improves overall circulation. Good blood flow is essential for strong, lasting erections. When circulation is poor, men may struggle with performance or feel less responsive during sex. Studies have shown that eugenol supports cardiovascular health, which may explain why cloves are often linked to better performance and arousal.
2. Boosts libido and sexual desire
Research suggests that cloves may help increase your libido, especially in men experiencing low desire. While more research is needed on humans, the link between cloves and increased testosterone levels points to a possible hormonal boost that could reignite your sexual interest and motivation.
“In males, Eugenol improves erection due to its vasodilatory effects,” Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu told Zikoko. “You see, erection results when there is an increased blood flow to the penis, and cloves help in achieving that. Dopamine is one chemical in the brain that makes us want to have sex, eugenol improves that, too which results in improved libido. Remember when we said it is rich in antioxidants? Eugenol helps reduce oxidative stress thereby reducing fatigue.”
3. Enhances sexual performance and stamina
In traditional medicine, cloves are often used by men looking to “last longer” or improve their overall stamina during sex. A 2004 study found that clove extract increased both the frequency of intercourse and the duration of activity. While this research is limited to animals, it supports what many men in Nigeria already believe: that cloves can help improve staying power and reduce early fatigue in bed.
4. Protects against sexual fatigue and inflammation
Cloves are rich in antioxidants, which help the body fight inflammation and oxidative stress, two things that can affect your sexual health over time. Stress, poor diet, and underlying illness can reduce energy and sexual function. By helping the body recover faster and reducing internal stress, cloves may support more consistent performance and help men feel less drained after sex.
5. May support testosterone balance
Testosterone is a key hormone that affects mood, sex drive, and physical response. While this hasn’t been confirmed in human trials, many Nigerian herbal mixtures include cloves for this reason. When testosterone is balanced, men are more likely to feel alert, energetic, and sexually responsive.

Benefits of Cloves Sexually for Women

Although most discussions focus on men, women also use cloves to support their bodies before, during, and after intimacy. Let’s have a look at some of those:
1. Improves vaginal health
Cloves contain strong antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which may help fight infections like yeast and bacterial overgrowth. Some women use clove-infused water for intimate hygiene or to ease discomfort. While this should always be done with caution and guidance, the idea is that cloves help maintain a clean, balanced environment that supports comfort during sex.
2. May increase arousal and lubrication
Good blood flow is essential for female arousal, and just like in men, cloves may help improve circulation. Better blood flow can lead to enhanced sensitivity and natural lubrication, which makes intimacy more enjoyable and less painful, especially for women who experience dryness or discomfort.
3. Eases menstrual pain and supports hormonal balance
For many women, sexual desire drops during or around their period. Cloves are commonly used to reduce cramps and support hormonal balance. When the body is more relaxed and pain-free, it’s easier to feel emotionally and physically ready for intimacy.
4. Helps reduce stress and fatigue
Chronic stress and tiredness can affect a woman’s interest in sex. Cloves are rich in antioxidants, which help the body manage stress and fight fatigue. When used regularly and in moderation, cloves may help women feel more energised and emotionally available for intimacy.
5. Supports post-childbirth recovery
In some Nigerian cultures, cloves are used in postpartum care to help the womb contract and reduce inflammation. This traditional use ties into the broader belief that cloves can help restore the body and prepare it for a healthy sex life after childbirth.
As with any herbal remedy, it’s important to use cloves safely, pay attention to how your body responds, and consult a healthcare provider when needed.

Benefits of Guava Leaves and Cloves Sexually
In many Nigerian homes, guava leaves and cloves are seen as powerful herbal ingredients with individual and combined health benefits. Some people also turn to them as a natural sexual wellness blend. Though human studies on their combined sexual effects are limited, each ingredient brings something useful to the table.
1. May support reproductive health
Guava leaves are rich in antioxidants like quercetin and vitamin C, which may help protect reproductive tissues from oxidative stress. Cloves, on the other hand, support hormone balance and circulation. When used together, they may help the body function more optimally, including in areas related to intimacy and desire.
2. Reduces inflammation and improves comfort
Both guava leaves and cloves have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In women, this may help ease vaginal irritation or reduce the risk of infections that interfere with intimacy. In men, these properties may support prostate and urinary health, which also affect sexual performance.
3. May increase libido and energy
Guava leaf extract has been studied for its blood sugar regulation and energy-boosting properties. When paired with cloves, which have been linked to increased testosterone in animal studies, the mix may support libido and overall vitality in both men and women.
While this mix is widely used in traditional remedies, always take herbal blends in moderation and pay attention to how your body reacts. If you have underlying conditions or are trying to conceive, speak with a healthcare professional before starting any herbal combination.

Benefits of Cloves and Honey Sexually

In traditional Nigerian herbal practices, mixing cloves with honey is another common remedy for boosting sexual health. Let’s look at some of the potential benefits of cloves and honey sexually.
1. May enhance stamina and performance
Cloves support blood circulation. Good blood flow is key for strong erections in men and heightened sensitivity in women. When paired with honey, a natural energy source, this mix may help reduce fatigue and improve endurance during sex. Many people take this combination to “last longer” and feel more active in bed.
2. Supports hormone balance and libido
Animal studies suggest cloves may increase testosterone levels in men, which plays a major role in desire, mood, and performance. Honey, too, contains small amounts of compounds that support reproductive health. Together, they may help regulate hormones and increase interest in sex.
3. Natural aphrodisiac effect
Both cloves and honey have been used for centuries as natural aphrodisiacs. Their warming effect, sweet flavour, and impact on energy levels create a blend many believe helps spark desire and create a more enjoyable experience.
4. Boosts immune health and reduces stress
A healthy immune system and low stress levels play a big role in sexual wellness. Cloves and honey are rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds that help the body fight infections and reduce inflammation. When the body is well-supported, sexual function often improves.
While natural, it’s important to take it in moderation, especially for people with diabetes or hormonal conditions.
Benefits of Cloves and Cinnamon Sexually

Cloves and cinnamon are two powerful spices that go beyond flavour to support sexual health. When combined, they may help improve circulation, balance hormones, and increase the desire in both men and women:
1. Improves blood circulation and arousal
Both cloves and cinnamon support healthy blood flow. Better circulation helps improve arousal, erection quality in men, and sensitivity in women.
2. May increase libido and hormone levels
Animal studies suggest both cloves and cinnamon may influence sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen, which play key roles in sexual desire and mood. This is especially useful for men with low libido or women experiencing hormonal imbalances.
3. Fights infections and improves vaginal health
Both spices are antimicrobial. Cinnamon has been studied for its ability to fight yeast infections like Candida, while cloves help fight bacterial and fungal infections. This may help women maintain better intimate health, leading to more comfort and pleasure during sex.

Other Health Benefits of Cloves
Beyond their sexual health uses, cloves are widely respected for their broad range of healing properties. Some of which are:
1. Rich in antioxidants
Cloves were ranked as having the highest antioxidant content among commonly used spices. Antioxidants protect your cells, support your immune system, and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.
2. Helps control blood sugar
Clove extract may help manage blood sugar levels by improving insulin function. This makes cloves useful for people with diabetes or those trying to prevent it.
3. Supports digestive health
Cloves are traditionally used to relieve bloating, indigestion, and gas. They help stimulate digestive enzymes and reduce inflammation in the gut, which can ease discomfort after meals.
4. Fights infections
Cloves have powerful antimicrobial and antifungal properties. They can help fight bacteria like E. coli and fungi like Candida, which cause infections in the mouth, gut, and genitals.
5. Relieves toothaches and oral pain
In local settings, many people chew cloves to relieve tooth pain. Eugenol acts as a mild anesthetic and reduces gum inflammation.
6. May help reduce inflammation
The anti-inflammatory properties of cloves make them useful for managing arthritis, joint pain, and general body aches. This benefit comes from both consuming cloves and using clove oil on affected areas.
7. Boosts immune function
Cloves contain vitamin C and other nutrients that support immune response. When taken regularly in small amounts, cloves may help reduce the frequency of infections, colds, or fatigue.
Any Health Risks or Side Effects of Cloves?
Yes, cloves are great for their health benefits, but it’s important to know that overuse or misuse can lead to side effects, especially when consumed without proper medical guidance.
“Eugenol is an interesting compound in the sense that its effects are in two ways,” Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu notes. “In the same way it can help improve your hormone levels, blood flow, and sexual functions, it can also harm them all depending on the dosing.”
1. May cause liver damage in large doses
Overconsumption of clove oil has been linked to liver damage, especially in children.
“Abusing cloves by taking high doses is dangerous to your health, especially your liver,” Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu warns. “Very important. If you’re already living with a liver disease, taking high doses of eugenol will do great harm to you. Now, about taking cloves mixed with honey, milk, or malt should be under your healthcare provider’s guidance as there are factors to consider.”
2. Risk of bleeding and blood thinning
Cloves have mild blood-thinning properties. If you’re on medications like aspirin or warfarin, or you have a bleeding disorder, large amounts of cloves could increase your risk of bleeding.
“Cloves have blood thinning properties thereby taking it with other medications, which are blood thinners, may give undesirable effects like easy bruising and bleeding,” says Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu. It can be used to support anti-diabetic medications. It is also important not to take high doses of Cloves while on anti-diabetic medications as it will do more harm than good.”
3. Can cause allergic reactions or irritation
Clove oil, when applied directly to the skin or gums, can cause irritation, rashes, or even burns, especially in people with sensitive skin. Chewing large amounts of raw cloves can also irritate the mouth or throat.
4. Unsafe for young children in oil form
Swallowing clove oil can be dangerous for children. Even small amounts may lead to serious side effects like seizures, liver failure, or breathing difficulties.
5. Possible effects on blood sugar
Cloves may lower blood sugar, which is helpful for diabetics in small amounts. But if you’re already on blood sugar medication, combining it with high clove intake could cause blood sugar to drop too low (hypoglycemia).
How to Get and Safely Use Cloves in Nigeria
In Nigeria, cloves are easy to find but using them safely and effectively is what really matters. Here’s how to source and consume cloves the right way
Where to Buy Cloves in Nigeria
- Open markets: You’ll find dried cloves sold in small sachets or containers. Ask for “kanafuru” in Yoruba-speaking areas
- Spice shops or herbal stalls: These often sell in bulk or offer ready-made mixes with cloves and other herbs.
- Supermarkets: Look in the spice aisle for bottled, cleaned cloves, a bit more expensive but usually more hygienic.
- Online (Jumia, Konga, etc.): For convenience, especially if you’re looking for clove powder or capsule supplements.
Safe Ways to Use Cloves
“When one takes a small dose of cloves (eg 1-2 cloves) it is nothing of concern but at high doses, cloves will greatly interfere with fertility treatments making things worse.”- Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu
- Boil in water (clove tea): Add 4–5 whole cloves to hot water. Boil for 10–15 minutes, strain, and drink warm. Once a day is enough for most people.
- Chew 1–2 cloves directly: Best for breath and mild digestive issues. Avoid it if you have sensitive gums or ulcers.
- Grind and mix small amounts into honey or warm water: Especially popular in sexual wellness blends. Stick to ½ teaspoon of ground cloves per serving.
Final Words
The benefits of cloves sexually for men and women are immense. Remember, cloves are safe when used in moderation in tea, cooking or recipes. But clove oil and large doses of clove powder should be approached with caution. If you’re pregnant, on medication, or managing a health condition, talk to a healthcare provider before using cloves regularly.
“For someone looking for natural ways to improve their sexual health, Cloves is a good place to start,” Pharmacist Nneji Tobechukwu concludes. “Using 1-2 of it in teas or as spice in food is good, getting eugenol and taking as prescribed will even do more good as you know you’re purely getting the real deal. I will also recommend the person add working out and lifting weight, cutting off sugary foods and overly processed foods (focus on natural less processed foods), do Kegel exercises and the person is off to a fantabulous start.”
