• BLACKPINK are undeniably one of the biggest acts in K-Pop today, and many platforms have tagged them the biggest girl group in the world. Made up of four members — Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa — the group debuted in 2016 with the single album Square One. And they’ve been dedicated to spoiling us with good music ever since.

When they’re not busy releasing bangers, their favourite pastime is breaking records thanks to their Blinks unwavering support. BLACKPINK dropped their long-awaited single, PINK VENOM, this morning, and we just know it’ll break even more records. From being the first to reach 75 million subscribers on Youtube to making Billboard’s Hot 100 list as a non-US act, here are some they’ve broken so far.

First K-Pop act to headline Coachella

BLACKPINK was the first K-Pop act to headline the prestigious annual music and arts festival in 2019. It’s safe to say this skyrocketed their global popularity and opened doors to many western collaborations including Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Cardi B and Lady Gaga.

First K-Pop girl group to chart on the Billboard Hot 100

Their collaboration with Lady Gaga on Sour Candy in 2020, earned them a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 at #33, making them the highest-charting girl group on the most notable singles chart in the US. They actually broke a record their own song, DDU-DU DDU-DU, set when it debuted and peaked at #55 in 2018, a huge feat for a non-US single with no features.

Highest-charting K-Pop girl group on the Billboard Hot 100

Well, later in 2020, they broke their own record again by peaking at #13 with their single, Ice Cream, featuring Selena Gomez. They’re not just the first K-Pop girl group to enter the chart but the current highest-charting.

First K-Pop group to hit a billion views on YouTube

BLACKPINK was the first K-Pop group to hit the “one billion views” mark with the music video of their single, DDU-DU DDU-DU. It’s been four years, and this video is still amassing massive views as it’s currently at 1.9 billion views. Fun fact: former label mate, PSY, was the first-ever to hit YouTube’s “Billion Views” Club with Gangnam Style.

First K-Pop girl group to be certified by the RIAA

DDU-DU DDU-DU was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2019, making BLACKPINK the first K-Pop girl group to be certified by the RIAA.

    Forbes most influential Korean celebrities

It’s one thing for you to be big and another for Forbes to recognise you’re big. The girls forever sets trends, so it was no shock when Forbes dubbed them “the most influential celebrities of 2019”.

    Guinness Book of World Records

The music video for their song, How You Like That, holds the Guinness world record for the “most viewed music video by a Korean act in 24 hours”. Their live rendition of the song was also acclaimed as one of the most viewed live videos in 2020. In total, they’ve broken three records, all of which were previously held by K-Pop boy band, BTS.

Most viewed live in YouTube history

After they released the song How You Like That, the girls performed it on a live YouTube Broadcast to 1.66 million viewers. It‘s still the most viewed live show in YouTube history. If it’s easy, your faves should do it.

Best in topping the iTunes chart

When they released Kill This Love in 2019, fans showed their support for the quartet by making sure it charted #3 on the iTunes chart. Which made the girls the first K-Pop girl group to reach the iTunes top 5 on a song’s release day. Their first studio album, The Album, which dropped the next year, was also the first of a k-Pop girl group to surpass one million pre-orders.

    More Billboard records

BLACKPINK was the first girl group to top Billboard’s Artist 100, and the first K-Pop girl group to enter and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.

    Another YouTube record

They’re the most subscribed-to musical acts on the platform, with over 76 million subscribers. There’s nothing these girls can’t do, and with the release of their second studio album, BORN PINK, next month [September 2022], we can only expect more record-breaking feats.

Most followed K-Pop idols on Instagram

The four members of BLACKPINK are also the first, second, third and fourth most-followed Korean celebrities on Instagram. And that’s not the only record the members have broken as soloists.

  • Honestly, what’s more wholesome than a good K-drama? Exactly, nothing. Instead of fretting about how old your parents are or complaining about which one was absent, take some time to make good memories with them by sharing the joy of a good family movie. Here are my top recommendations.

    The Handmaiden

You don’t want to over-excite them as they grow older, so start on an easy note with the Handmaiden. It’s a simple movie about a wealthy heiress, Lady Hideko, who reads books to old, totally not-insane men, her fiance, Count Fujiwara, who is totally not a con artist and her trusty maid who may or may not be working with the con artists. I mean, what could go wrong?  The Handmaiden is the perfect parent-child bonding movie. But if any sex scene magically appears, you can pretend to look away while your parent(s) pick up calls from nowhere.

    Nevertheless

Watch this one, especially with your mum, so that when she prays for you to find love, she can come correct with reference. Nevertheless is about sweetheart Park Jae-Eon, an art major who usually doesn’t do relationships but falls for the female lead Yoo Na-Bi in seconds. Everyone loves romance, and when you sigh during all the 100 cuddling scenes, your mum will find it cute and not start a whole lecture about how you need to find your partner.

    Eve

Your parents will eat this one up with all the Nollywood movies about badass female characters. Who doesn’t like to see a powerful woman fight the men who destroyed her family, has a side-fling with a married man, is cold-hearted for fun and an all-around badass? Nigerian parents love these types of movies.

    The World of the Married

A drama about unearthing family secrets? That’s every Nigerian parent’s favourite genre. You get to have a great bonding experience with your parents. Your parents also get to talk about how not all perfect-looking families are perfect inside, just like the main character Ji Seon-u’s family. And how you should be grateful that you have an ideal family inside and outside. Wow, who wouldn’t love this?

    Her Private Life

This drama is about Sung Deok-Mi, a good girl with a job as a curator with a dark secret. She’s a huge fan of Shi-An, a K-pop idol, a secret that almost leaks until her boss pities her and pretends to date her, and they eventually fall in love. You can use this drama to explain to your parents that your obsession with K-drama and K-pop will‌ also help you find love like it did with Sung Deok-Mi. You’re welcome.

    Love and Leashes

You can tell from the title that this will be a fun watch. Nigerian parents love keeping their kids on a leash, so watching it happen on TV should be fun. So what if the male lead likes to bark to please his Dom? If your dad asks you why they are tying someone’s child with rope, yet he doesn’t cry when they beat him. Tell him that the character is possessed, that’s why.

Warning: if they remove you from their will, please don’t disturb us. Plus, they traumatised you first, so think of this as payback.

  • At a recent concert, Tiwa Savage, revealed that her song, Somebody’s Son featuring Brandy, is a gospel song with the “son” being Jesus Christ. For most of you, it was a surprise, but for fans like me, we been knew.

Just like Somebody’s Son, here are some other Tiwa Savage gospel songs you may have missed due to lack of focus.

    Sugarcane

There’s nothing like the love of God, and Tiwa gets it. That’s why she sings, “Sugar, Sugarcane. Something wey sweet like sugarcane,” in the intro of her song, Sugarcane. By the time we get to the bridge, Tiwa is in full gratitude mode singing about how God lights up her world like the “Fourth of July” and scatters her medula with His sweet, sweet love.

    Eminado (feat. Don Jazzy)

Tiwa was probably deep in the spirit and speaking in tongues when she recorded Eminado. I don’t know what it means, but something about it feels spiritual.

    Koroba

One of Tiwa’s biggest hits, Koroba, is about knowing who you are and not letting the world’s opinions distract you from fulfilling your purpose on earth — enjoyment. Please don’t ask me how I know these things. If you listened with a heart willing to receive, you’d get this message too.

    All Over

Remember that old Sunday school song that goes: “Bend low, bend low, bend low and see what the Lord can do”? Yes, that’s the inspiration behind Tiwa’s All Over. A song about understanding the importance of thanksgiving, All Over is the perfect song to play when you get that job or alert you’ve been praying for.

    Wanted

Real fans like me know Tiwa’s Wanted is a gospel song about defeating the Devil. She literally sings, “When he started to beg, I left him there,” at one point, and then in the chorus, she goes, “By the way, nothing you fit do. Because by the way, I’m badder than you.”

The Devil is the person she’s obviously “badder” than. So the next time you secure victory over principalities and powers of the underworld, play Wanted as a middle finger to the Devil.

    49-99

It takes someone who’s suffered at the hands of Nigeria to really get the powerful meaning behind 49-99. Unlike Wanted, which is a victory song, 49-99 is a prayer request for when you’re in the trenches. Do you think Tiwa was just vibing when she sang, “Omo, no be so me I want to live o”? No, dears, it’s the prayer of a sister seeking God’s face.

Another angle: The song might actually be about the virgins in the bible waiting for their bridegroom. Tiwa probably missed the maths, but something tells me “49 sitting” is for the virgins that stayed, while “99 standing” is for the virgins that went to buy kerosene.

    Love Me x3

Love Me x3 starts with, “Sometimes I’m up, sometimes I’m down. But ara mi bale, when you’re around.” What does the bible say about the peace of God again? Well, it passes all understanding for sure. Amen?

    Save My Life

To be fair, any song with the word “Bere” automatically falls into a praise and worship playlist. If you’re not bending down to dance for Jesus, who are you doing it for, Satan?

    Temptation

Even the self-proclaimed African Bad Gal knows it’s hard out here for a Christian sister with temptation flying everywhere. Tiwa sang Temptation because Wizkid was tempting and leading her astray. My good sis didn’t want to be derailed from her heavenly race, so she called out for help.

    Work Fada

On Work Fada, Tiwa speaks against laziness, calling on her brother and sisters to get up and work. Does that sound familiar? If you’ve read Proverbs 24, verses 33-34, you’d understand where Tiwa is coming from.

  • If there’s one video that’ll remain iconic for years to come, it’s this interview video of the girl in the market who says, “Me on my own, I’m ashawo. Everybody on their own, ashawo,” when asked about women being slut-shamed. And honestly, where is the lie? With the way we’re wearing less and going out more, it’ll seem like we’ve fully entered an ashawo era of fashion, and I’m totally here for it.

Nigeria’s relationship with Ashawo fashion back in the day

Just like the world around us, fashion is constantly changing and evolving. Whether we like it or not, the clothes we wear are a tool to reflect or at least capture part of the conversation going on in a particular era. In the 1960s and 1970s, Nigerians tried to find an identity in a country that was finally independent of colonisers.

But by the 1990s, we had finally settled on a trend that embodied the saying “go big or go home”. The geles were as wide as DStv dishes, and the baggy pants were baggying like no tomorrow.

In all these eras, Nigerians have always factored in “morals”, choosing to be covered up no matter what. Wearing a backless dress or showing your belly button was scandalous in the 1990s. I mean, anyone who grew up watching old Nollywood movies will tell you miniskirts were the trademark look of a wild girl whose over-sexualisation would eventually make her barren or single to stupor.

    A Scene from The President’s Daughter (1998)

The moral standard for fashion was so high that sometimes the sex workers in Nollywood films wore turtlenecks.

    A scene from Domitilla (1996)

With the 2000s came even skimpier outfits thanks to the MTV generation consuming Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. However, Nigeria’s adoption of this fashion trend (now fondly referred to as Y2K fashion) was restricted to the video vixens on screen or the bad girls in films like Abuja Connection, Sharon Stone or Girls Cot

A scene from Girls Cot (2006)

No matter how much fashion evolved or changed in the Western world, for Nigerians, it still remained a tool used to police women’s bodies — labelling them as either good or bad girls.

Alté scene brings back y2k fashion

The first time I noticed Nigerians reclaiming the word “ashawo” and getting into our slut rhythm was in 2018, as alté culture became mainstream. Heavily influenced by the sluttiest era of all time, the late 1990s to early 2000s, alté acts came with a different sound and look. The boys had their hair dyed in crazy colours like pink and purple, while the girls rocked see-through tops and low-rise jeans.

RECOMMENDED:  These Old-school Fashion Trends Still Bang in 2022

As usual, the first reaction was resistance: the alté boys were called gay, and the girls? Well, the worst insult Nigerians feel they can give a woman is ashawo/slut. Did the happening babe care? No. Over time, more mainstream acts tapped into this market and what once felt like a niche group on SoundCloud and a closed-up part of Instagram filtered down to regular folks.

I remember turning up to a concert in Lagos in 2019 and feeling like I’d been sucked into a 2000s music video. That same year, Hot Girl Summer became a thing thanks to Megan Thee Stallion, and Old Nollywood pages started popping up randomly on Instagram, romanticising the early 2000s and turning the bad girls from that era into fashion icons. These looks quickly moved from concerts and the gram, to parking lots and regular hangouts.

In 2022, what our parents frowned on has gotten a facelift and rebranded as Y2k-inspired looks. From Ayra Starr to Odunsi The Engine, the cut-outs are everywhere, and crop-tops have become baggy shirts at this point.

Did I forget to mention that the men are also in on the ashawo fit trend? Dying your hair pink or painting your nails are no longer signs that you might be queer. Now it just means you’re either a creative, someone on Twitter with interesting opinions, or a tech-bro.

Men have also made ashawo shorts a thing — are you really a happening guy if your shorts are kissing your knees? Nah, bro.

Ashawo fits have become a statement

Taking men out of the equation, by reclaiming these ashawo clothes, women are finally controlling the narrative. If we unpack operation “cover yourself up”, it’s easy to see that it has nothing to do with women.

Instead, it’s always been a tool to keep women in check and excuse men of sexual misconduct. That’s why the question, “What were you wearing?” pops up when sexual harassment or abuse cases come into the light. But if there’s one thing we know, it’s that covering up hasn’t stopped these cases from happening daily.

    Alté fashion icon, Ashley Okoli

These ashawo clothes are a way for women to say that their worth isn’t tied to their bodies.

With the way fashion has continued to evolve since 2018, it looks like our dress sense isn’t going to get less sluttier anytime soon. These clothes aren’t about sex or simple thirst traps; they’re about confidence and ownership. If you can’t pull it off, fine. But don’t hate on the people who can, because that’s just tacky.

    QUIZ: How Fashionable Are You?

  • Life was so simple when millennials like me knew 8 p.m. on Thursdays were strictly reserved for Wale Adenuga’s masterpiece, Super Story. It wasn’t just a TV show but a cultural event that united Nigerians across the country. But with so many seasons — it’s still on, guys — it’s hard to select the best stories the show has told. Luckily for you, I love a challenge.

Here’s a list Wale Adenuga himself would agree with.

    Oh Father! Oh Daughter!

The OG! A classic tale of “Men will disgrace you last last”, Oh Father! Oh Daughter! told the story of Suara, a man who offers his wife up to a wealthy man just so he can land a job. As if that’s not enough, when he started getting money, he dumped his wife for the original city girl, Toyin Tomato, who showed him pepper instead of tomatoes.

The show featured Sola Sobowale in the iconic role of Toyin Tomato. She was so good, she got a spinoff show, An Eye For An Eye.

    Nnenna

Who can forget Nnenna, the ghost floating around Lagos in a white V-neck top looking for revenge? Featuring Shan George and a very young Gabriel Afolayan, this season focused on the title character who vows not to transition to the afterlife until her father’s best friend, Mr Williki pays for killing her in cold blood. Honestly, I blame everyone involved for trusting someone called “Mr Williki” in the first place.

    One Bad Apple

I don’t think Nigerian people have hated a fictional couple as much as Officer Francis and Caro. One Bad Apple was one of the most intense seasons, and it had us glued to our seats, trying to find out what type of fuckery Officer Francis would do next. Who else has the guts to attend their married side chick’s baby’s naming ceremony?

We need to bottle that man’s audacity and sell it as a perfume ASAP.

RECOMMENDED: Nigerians Would Rather Die Than Skip the Intros of These TV Shows

    The Grasscutter

In The Grasscutter, Kehinde Bankole starred as Eno, a campus babe who gets harassed and sexually abused by her lecturer. The gag is, any man who sleeps with Eno dies after seven days. And I—oop! Well, the show focused on the lecturer’s attempts to avoid death — visiting churches and a local babalawo; honestly, I didn’t feel bad for him. You play stupid games; you win stupid prizes. Period.

    Everything It Takes

The most glamourous season of Super Story, Everything It Takes came out in the time of abortion belts, headbands and dangling earrings. The season focused on three friends Chinelo, Deola and Boma, fighting to achieve their dreams across fields, from music (I can still remember Kehinde Bankole singing Minnie Riverton’s Loving You) to law. These babes were the original feminist icons and even had their faces on Lux soap at the time. Good days!

    Omoye

Omoye is one of those Super Story seasons that hasn’t aged well. It’s like sweet fried rice, but you can tell it’s not fresh. The focus was on Omoye, a girl who after her parents couldn’t afford to pay her JAMB fees, got pregnant, had an abortion and died. The show attempts to punish its lead for “wrongdoings”, and it doesn’t sit well with my spirit. #HerBodyHerChoice

The Gods Are Not To Blame

Adapted from Ola Rotimi’s play of the same title, The Gods Are Not To Blame was an epic season about a young prince who from the day he was born was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. It sounds crazy, I know. But despite several attempts at preventing his fate, the prince ends up doing just what he was destined to — he killed his dad and married his mother.

    Face of Deceit

Super Story had an agenda against Yoruba men, and it’s lowkey funny. In another case of don’t trust a Yoruba demon, Face of Deceit followed Adaobi, who got pregnant and had an abortion for Yomi Benson while in university. They still got married, but the abortion, in classic old Nollywood style, ruined her womb. It was all smooth sailing until Yomi decided to secretly marry a girl from the village, and all hell broke loose.

Quiz: How Well Do You Know Super Story

  • In the early 2000s, K-pop began to get international appeal. Girls’ Generation (also called SNSD) debuted in 2007 and were a massive part of the second generation of K-pop idols who rose to fame.

Girls’ Generation burst into the limelight 15 years ago, made timeless music and were dubbed the most influential K-pop girl group of all time. They could have rested and allowed their legacy to live on, but they just released their first album together on the August 5th 2022 for the first time in five years, and every song is, well, a back-to-back hit.

While we aren’t pitching bad bitches against each other, it’s important to respect the nine-woman band who paved the way for groups like Blackpink, Twice and Red Velvet. They were the first Asian girl group to achieve 100 million views in five different music videos. Who was doing it like them?

The women: Taeyeon, Tiffany, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Yoona, Sooyoung, Seohyun and Jessica who left in 2014, had OG fans bending themselves into pretzels trying to dance the choreography of their first single Into the New World years after its release. When it came to choreography, you could always count on Girls’ Generation to serve.

RELATED: How to Spot a K-Pop Fan in Nigeria

Girls’ Generation were (and still are) the queens of iconic K-pop. From Gee,  which I’m convinced was divinely inspired. Then there was I Got a Boy, The Boys, Oh, Mr Taxi, and Run Devil, Run, each song with its unique visuals and concepts. They made music that stuck in your head for years. They were always experimenting and trying new genres, which is why their newly released album “FOREVER 1” hits.

Not every K-pop group can blend genres like that in one song and get away with it, but they make it work because when you’re big, you’re big.

Their songs remain some of K-pop group’s most iconic and recognisable songs. Their willingness to evolve shows that nothing can diminish the existing impact Girls’ Generation has had on K-Pop.

Why does FOREVER 1 hit differently?

FOREVER 1 is SNSD’s seventh studio album (and first as an entire group in five years). The whole album feels nostalgic — they aren’t trying to do anything they haven’t already done before, and you can tell that they had fun while making those songs. It’s also the first album where the members actively participated in the production and songwriting.

There are ten tracks on the album, each a celebration of their growth. The album is a fusion of different genres, from their classic bubblegum pop sound in FOREVER 1, then there’s RnB with Seventeen and  Villan with electronic pop. You can see how each person’s style has grown stronger and more mature with each song.

Each song takes you on a journey and leaves you giddy with excitement. This album is perfect for those moments when life feels too good.

Forever 1 retained the old Girls’ Generation while showing us that if they wanted to make music for this age, they could, and would still absolutely dominate. I don’t think any of their works will be topping this for a long time. It’s exciting to witness them come this far, and I’m excited for what they produce next.

  • I love K-dramas because they usually have the most wholesome love stories, maybe it’s because Koreans really do get love. They build up tension that fills us fans with enough longing for two characters to be together even though we may not have enough romance in our lives. Here are my top eight favourite couples of all time from popular K-dramas.

Lee Ik Jun and Chae Song Hwa in Hospital Playlist

I love an excellent friend-to-lovers movie, and Hospital Playlist did not disappoint this couple. They’d been in love with each other since they were in college and it took him almost dying for her to tell him she loved him back. Their relationship was slow-paced, but I can’t even complain because their chemistry was insane.

Yoon Sae Bom and Jung Yi Hyun in Happiness

The last thing I’d do in an apocalypse is fall in love, but these two made it work. Watching Yi Hyun risk his life to protect  Sae Bom  on several occasions shouldn’t be as cute as it was but it was. Of all the couples on this list, they deserve the best.

Yoon Hye Jin and Hong Doo Shik in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha

Enemies to lovers trope? Inject it, please. Whenever they did anything romantic, my cheeks burned because, God, when? They were so tender with each other and willing to make hard decisions to make each other happy. Knowing that they are not a real couple breaks my heart every day.

Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young in Vincenzo

Forget that they didn’t end up together and focus on their chemistry. I’ve never seen a romantic pair as capable of so much chaos, as the both of them. They found a way to make us laugh with all their antics in a show that could easily have been too sad to watch.

Myul Mang and Tak Dong Kyung in Doom at Your Service

Imagine being the most negative and pessimistic person on earth, and the guy you like who is a god takes you back to your happiest memory just for fun. What a flex! How can we not stan? Their relationship was intense and heavy, but it was all worth rooting for them.

Kim Joo-won and Gil Ra-im in Secret Garden

This show is old but gold because, in the late 2000’s, female leads were constantly chasing after men that were mean to them. Kim Joo-won was pursuing Gil Ra-im. In the series, this man flew in a director to watch her perform just cause he wanted her to get a role she missed. He even tried to give up his inheritance to be with her. Their relationship is a 20/10 for me.

Ri Jeong-Hyeok and Yoon Se-Ri in Crash Landing On You

Do you know how insane you have to be as a North Korean soldier to hide and protect a South Korean who illegally enters your country? That, there, is romance. You know when your chemistry is so good, you fall in love and get married in real life? Exactly, there’s no need to talk too much.

Choi Ung and Kook Yeon-su in Our Beloved Summer

They started as lovers, became exes and then lovers again. They were both unwilling to open up to each other. Of course, they broke up. Years later,  they realised they were still in love and decided to do everything right this time. Choi Ung and Kook yeon-su made my heart ache in the sweetest way possible, and everything about their relationship felt so real, if only they weren’t acting.

    Love and Leashes

Some of the best romantic K-dramas started with an office romance, and I’m glad this movie did not fail me. What happens when two coworkers find themselves in a contract-based BDSM relationship and try their hardest not to fall in love? Chaos. This movie accurately represented how kinks play out and still managed to be sweet and wholesome. The lead actors had great chemistry; the best part was that the dominant was a woman. Hard not to root for them.

    Alive

Koreans realized that they could put multiple spins on zombie movies and haven’t stopped making them ever since. If you enjoy films like Train to Busan, this zombie thriller will hit the spot. The movie follows the life of a loner millennial video gamer who has to fight to survive after the world turns into an apocalyptic zombie nightmare. But it’s more than horror; it’s the struggle to keep hope alive even while the world burns before your eyes which is fitting since it was released in 2020.

    Wish You

For people that enjoy K-pop, Wish You is an LGBTQ romance set in the K-pop music industry that stars two actual singers in the lead roles. In Wish You, Sang Lee is a Keyboardist who falls in love with the work of a street musician played by Kang Ye Na. They spend some time working on music together, and of course, they fall in love. This cute romance will hit the spot if you enjoy movies where characters fall in love at first sight.

    The Bros

The Bros is a hilarious movie about two brothers who haven’t spoken since their mother died, forced to work together to carry out traditions at their father’s funeral. Add a mix of classic sibling rivalry, a mysterious woman, family secrets and meddlesome siblings and be ready for premium entertainment. The movie is funny and heartfelt as we watch the two brothers try to fix their relationship amid the crazy situations they find themselves in.

    Okja

If you’re a Bong Joon Ho fan or loved Parasite, you’ve either already seen or will enjoy this movie. It follows the life of a young girl called Mija who tries to rescue her genetically modified pig “Okja.” This gut-wrenching movie spoke about the horrors of capitalism and the brutal treatment of animals in the food industry. After seeing Okja, you might become a bit obsessive about how the food industry works, pele.

    Space Sweepers

Koreans have range, and they showed it with this sci-fi movie. Space Sweepers is set in 2092 after Earth has become nearly unlivable, and a corporation called UTS starts to build homes on mars for people that can afford it. It’s a hilarious movie about a crew of “space sweepers” who collect debris from space and sell it for money. Their lives are a mess, but it gets worse when Dorothy, a robot which belongs to UTS, stows away on their ship. At first, they try selling Dorothy to the highest bidder, but the crew falls in love with her and make it their mission to protect her.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure

For people that love adventure, The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure fit’s the bill when you don’t want to watch something too serious. A group of thieves and their eccentric leader Wu Mu-chi are stuck in the middle of the ocean but are rescued by pirates. Both groups are after a lost royal treasure and form an unlikely alliance to find it. It’s a movie about thieves and pirates, so expect lots of deceit, hilarious scenes and romance.

  • Everyone has that one teacher that changed their lives, and so do anime protagonists, except they are called sensei. Sometimes, they are there to push the characters to be better and other times. They help uptight students relax and enjoy life. Here are seven anime teachers we wish were real enough to teach us.

    Master Roshi – Dragon Ball

If you get to train one of the most powerful anime heroes, of course, you will make the cut. Goku might have been super strong, but he owes it all to Master Roshi’s constant martial arts lessons. Most people his age can barely move, but he maintained his strength and speed. What makes him such a good teacher is his willingness to motivate and train his students, no matter how old or young.

    Satoru Gojo – Jujutsu Kaisen

Satoru Gojo is the literal embodiment of the chaotic good trope. He uses unconventional methods to train his students; of course, he is super powerful. I especially love anyone willing to fight higher-ups for his student’s sake, which is why I think he makes such a great teacher. This man listens to no one but himself and is never wrong. I’d listen to any teacher that is confident in themself tbh.

    Korosensei – Assassination Classroom

The man/octopus has sensei in his name; how can we omit him? To date, he is still my favourite teacher of all time. He takes time to study each student and trains them according to their strengths. He is involved in their lives inside and outside the classroom and wants to see them be the best versions of themselves. He might have been training them to be assassins, specifically to kill him. But he gets a pass for being genuine and dedicated to ensuring his students grew up to be good people.

Dr. Franken Stein – Soul Eater

I love when a sensei is a good mix of crazy genius and powerful, which describes Dr Franken Stein. He might be a little sadistic and tire his students by constantly asking them if he can dissect them, but sometimes, red flags are green. If he isn’t teaching Soul and Maka to get along, he is busy protecting his students from enemies. He might be a bit mad, but only the best senseis are mad.

Arataka Reigen – Mob Psycho 100

It’s scarce that a student starts as more powerful than his sensei, but that is the dynamic of Reigen and Mob’s relationship. This man has no supernatural abilities as he claims, but if lying was a sport, he’s always come first. At first, Regin uses Mob to make money in his scam business of exorcising demons. Still, he eventually becomes just the sensei Mob needs. Mob wanted Reigen to train him to be more powerful, but Reigen taught him to be a better person. Through him, Mob learns to be more confident as you will be if you know someone will always listen to your problems and give you advice where necessary.

    Hatake Kakashi – Naruto

It’s tough to choose one sensei from Naruto because all of them were great teachers, but today, let’s give Kakashi his flowers. Even after amassing so much power, Kakashi was the only reason Naruto and his team members had such a good moral compass. This man always ensured that their safety was more important than completing missions and taught them to value people’s lives. He made what could have been a stressful childhood training to be a ninja fun and was always there when they needed him.

Osamu Dazai – Bungo Stray Dogs

I know this might be an unconventional entry but hear me out. Dazai might have lost his will to live, but it comes in clutch whenever they face danger, and he dives in to save his students without thinking first. That’s the mark of a great teacher to me. He puts them first before himself, and that’s what makes him so great. When he’s not busy trying to unalive himself, Dazai’s always busy training and teaching his students to enhance their abilities and learn to work with others. That’s my problematic king, and I stand by him.
