• Everyone has an anime world they’d survive in. This quiz will show you yours.

  • After 25 years of adventure, Ash and Pikachu’s Pokemon storyline will end this year. It’s sad, but they’ve had over 1200 episodes of fun and battles defeated by the power of friendship, so they’ve tried.

Now that they no longer have work, here are some things they can do to fill the void.

    Grow old

Now that he has time on his hands, he can consider looking like the 35-year-old man he’s supposed to be. I don’t know how Japan is o, but if he had a Nigerian mum, he’d have to drink anointing oil daily and go for deliverance.

    Visit his family members

I too, would go on a quest to avoid my family members, but this man child, who remains eternally ten might’ve taken it too far. Does he occasionally see his mom and absent father? Yes, but now that he’s jobless, he can spend even more time helping out at her restaurant and paying tax like the rest of us.

    Start a business

I mean, he’s already the best pokemon trainer. If he starts a gym, people will pay to be taught. He too dey vex, so I don’t know about him being a good teacher, but it’s better than loafing around.

    Get into tech

Will catching pokemon put food on his table? No. Tech is in, and pokemon is out. All he needs to do is buy a MacBook, catch a python, invest in turtlenecks and start talking about seed funding for something. Boom, a million billion in his account.

    Rest

Even God rested on the seventh day. If he’s not fighting team rocket, he’s training one difficult pokemon or preparing for a battle — all for free. It’s okay, abeg. He should rest.

    Become a travel blogger

He already has 25 years of experience travelling around. I’d watch his “get ready with me”, “what I eat in a day”, and “outfit check” videos any day. This job would fit him well.

Realise the world is cold and dark, and friendship isn’t everything

Optimism is out; pessimism is in. In real life, you can’t even defeat a bad-mouthed three-year-old with the power of love and friendship, not to talk of real-life challenges like stretching your January salary. He would understand sha. All the very many times he lost a fight prepared him for this moment.

  • Some anime characters go through a lot to eventually defeat their enemies and stay happy forever. But the ones in this article can’t relate. Overall best in suffering, all of them.

    Kaneki Ken (Tokyo Ghoul)

Anime fans probably watched Tokyo Ghoul and decided never to go on a date. My bro thought he found love, went on a date and almost got eaten by the babe, who was a ghoul. After almost dying, all his organs were replaced by ghoul organs. Then he had to watch the illusion of his happy home crumble and his friends get tortured. Your hair would turn white too, if you had to go through all he did.

    Natsuki Subaru (Re: Zero)

Imagine being transported to a universe that resets every time you reincarnate. Sounds fun, except Subaru always died in the most ridiculously painful ways. He’s been ripped apart by carnivorous bunnies, melted alive; he’s died more than 15 times in the span of hours, and he can’t tell anyone. My guy stays wishing for actual death that never comes.

    Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

When I first met this character, I wondered why he never smiled, and then, we saw his backstory, and it made sense. Levi lost his mum young, was groomed as a child vigilante and lost many of his friends. Let’s not add that he lives in a flesh-eating Titan-riddled world.

    Ash Lynx (Banana Fish)

You know those characters that just go through too much for no reason? That’s Ash. He was abused as a child, involved in the mafia, had to watch his brother get shipped to war then learn he had a mindless death over some stupid drug. As if all those weren’t enough, he also had to witness his friend’s kidnap multiple times, lost his best friend and was imprisoned in a human experimentation hospital. Someone give this guy a hug, abeg.

    Shiro (Deadman Wonderland)

Shiro isn’t even a good guy, but she still didn’t have to suffer like that. Imagine thinking you’ve found the perfect family to adopt you, then they start experimenting on you. Anime governments need to be beaten because, what? The constant injections made her body weak, and eventually, her mental state crumbled. All this babe wanted was love, and she got the opposite of it.

    Akira Fudo (Devilman Crybaby)

Imagine your best friend was satan. Instead of enjoying his wickedness alone, mans forces you to turn into a demon and makes sure everyone you love gets killed for some weird utopia he wants for the both of you. Anytime you catch your breath, he’s like, “I raise you even more pain”.

    Special mention: Guts (Beresk)

Imagine being born from a corpse, your best friend betraying you and being in immense pain and suffering until the day you die. No reincarnation for a better life, just back-to-back shege. On top of all that suffering, mans still went to hell. A1 in suffering for real.

  • Nobody is saying you have a problem oh, but remember a year or 10 ago when you just “kind of” liked K-pop? Now, all you have is a terrible sleep schedule because you’re up late watching variety shows to spark joy in your life. And if you just started listening to K-pop, you’re well on your way to exhibiting these traits.

    You and YouTube are besties

You spend too much time watching variety shows, music videos, behind-the-scenes interviews and live performances. No one is saying that’s bad, but check how long you spend on this app. At this point, your catchphrase should be “just one more episode”, liar isonu.

    You’ve downloaded Korean apps

Weverse, VLIVE and all their family members, because the air you breathe — as it should be — is K-pop, and you must consume it everywhere.

Your fashion style isn’t for our weather

Your Google history is full of searches like “Korean street style”. Your parents don’t even complain anymore. How many times a day do you lie to yourself that you too could be fashion-forward if you had Jennie or Lisa’s wardrobe?

You don’t own your gallery anymore

Because it now belongs to your idols. It started as an innocent thing, saving one picture here or there, but now, you can’t find photos of your friends to post during their birthdays. To be fair, they too, should go and become K-pop idols if they want your attention.

    You use K-pop lingo

You mention things like maknae, aegyo and bias in regular conversations like everyone understands what you mean. Bonus points if you sprinkle Korean phrases like kamsahamnida, saranghae and araso and expect people to act like their brains have subtitles.

    You’ve watched videos without subtitles

If you’ve gotten to this point, just admit your fate. If you’ve ever found yourself watching a K-pop video for four hours and smiling until you realise you don’t even understand a word of what they’re saying, pele, welcome to the club. We’re broke because we spend all our money on data and merch in this club.

Your social media looks like a fan account

As it should be when you’re supporting greatness, to be honest, but what happens when half of your followers now have you muted? They’ll see someone complaining about how plantain is more than ₦1500, next thing a K-pop artist is dancing the most complicated choreography ever created.

  • For some of these shows, female friendships may not have been their primary themes, but they completely stole the spotlights. Here are my favourite female friendships for the 2022 K-dramas.

    Twenty-Five Twenty-One

Besides the fact that Twenty-Five Twenty-One broke all our hearts when the leads didn’t end up together, Na Hee-Doo, Ko Yu-rim and Ji Seung-wan’s friendship completely stole the show. These girls selflessly supported one another even though they had a rocky start. The scene where He-doo and Yu-rim were tired after practising in the gym for a long time and kept turning the fan towards the other person will always be cute because how can you not think of yourself first?

    20th Century Girl

Imagine loving a friend enough to help her stalk a boy she likes, falling in love with him and still being willing to give him up for your friend’s happiness? Not going to lie, it could never be me, but that’s the kind of love Bo-ra and Yeon-do  have for each other is too precious. The way they cried when they saw each other again after Yeon-do’s surgery will forever be etched in my mind.

    Extraordinary Attorney Woo

The titular character struggled a lot navigating courtrooms as an autistic person, but her amazing friends are always there by her side. She has the best friends for real: Dong Geurami with their cute special greeting and “Spring Sunshine” Choi Soo-yeon, her work bestie who doesn’t let anyone bully her.

    39

39 managed to handle a complex subject like death through the lens of the beautiful friendship between three women. This show explored dealing with love, work, and loss and struggles with close friends by your side. I especially enjoy the friendship dynamics between older women and I loved seeing them banter and tease each other so much I forgave the show for all the tears it made me shed.

    Business Proposal

Ha-ri and Young-seo’s friendship shouldn’t work because of how different their backgrounds are, but it does. They argued like sisters and made bad decisions together. They were always there for each other. In that one scene where Young-Seo has a stalker and felt unsafe, Ha-ri came to be with her. I lived for every shared moment with them on screen.

    Our Blues

I loved how this show handled jealousy in friendships. Eun-hui and Mi-ran may not have had a picture-perfect friendship, but they cared for each other, even after hurting each other multiple times. All that mattered was the effort to fix their relationship and work through that pain. Then there was Yeong-ok, a fiercely independent girl trying to make money for her disabled sister, who found friendship with the Haenyeons, ocean divers, who’d initially given her a hard time.

    Little Women

While the characters in Little Women are sisters, it took a special type of bond to be friends. In Joo, In Kyung, and In Hye may have disagreed a number of times, but ultimately all they wanted for each other was a life of happiness. I’m so glad they each got the break they deserved.

  • Every two business days, someone drops a hot take that anime is for kids, and you know what? They’re right. Only children would want to watch a bunch of characters run around and fight people that are not fighting them. That’s peak joblessness. Here’s all the proof you need that anime is for kids.

Anime is too soft and emotional

As an adult, why are you watching something that’ll make you feel warm when news channels exist? You better call all the kids in your neighbourhood together so they can watch Grave of Fireflies or Attack on Titan. Those are the kinds of shows only kids deserve to see abi?

RELATED: QUIZ: Which Anime Character Are You According to Your State of Origin?

The main characters are kids, so only kids can relate to them

No,  think about it; how can you relate to a twelve-year-old boy looking for his dad and gallivanting around with his little friend with no troubles whatsoever? What’s realistic about that? As an adult, why would you be watching Hunter X Hunter? What life lessons can you gain? Please rethink your life choices.

    See, they totally agree

    When characters die, it’s cute

We all know that death is not cute in real life. Indeed since anime is for kids, they’ll avoid the grimness of death, right? It’s not like they show splattered blood in Chainsaw Man or a half-eaten, Gala-looking human being in Attack on Titan. No, they just put soft flowers around the cute dead character. People don’t just explode after becoming curses  because of some evil antagonist. It’s for kids, nau.

    Anime has the softest themes

I mean, it’s a genre for kids; it’s totally okay for kids to watch a psychopath that kill people for fun by writing their names in a black book based on his moral high horse. It’s not like seeing Ryuk from Death Note will scar them for life or anything. Just pure wholesomeness and clear blue skies.

All they do is go on little quests to activate the power of friendship

What’s the fun in watching something like that? Only kids enjoy watching cartoons. It’s not like anime characters are known for occasionally trying to kill their friends over small things. In fact, I recommend letting kids watch Devilman Crybaby to experience true friendship at its peak.

    awww besties

    Hentai is age-appropriate for kids

You definitely want to interrupt your kid’s regular programming of cococmelon with possibly tentacle sex scenes in anime. I mean, sex education should be taught early, abi? So what if they show a lot of problematic stuff? A genre for kids can do no wrong.

    Violence is always the answer

Now come on, that child in your life shouldn’t still be watching stuffed animals teach them life lessons that help them grow to be kind people. They need to watch anime series about a man who occasionally turns into a person with a chainsaw for a head and a chainsaw on his arms to help him fight devils. Yep. That’s something I’d definitely let a child see before they go to bed.

  • It’s Halloween season, and while a lot of people like to mock Old Nollywood for their weird CGI and crazy plot twists, I think they made some of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen.

As someone who loves the horror genre, I’ve gone back to watch some of these movies, so I can give you tips on how to survive them if by any chance you find yourself haunted by a demon baby or tempted to sacrifice your spouse for money.

    Let’s go.

    Diamond Ring

Diamond Ring is one of the many  reasons I don’t play with dead people. The film follows Chidi, played by Teju Babyface (emphasis on the “baby face” here) and the misfortunes that follow him and his friends after they steal a diamond ring from a dead Liz Benson.

How to survive this film: Keep your hands to yourself. Even if you want to steal, is it from a dead person? What happened to having small shame?

    Nneka the Pretty Serpent

While I’m not a big fan of the 2020 remake, I have to admit the original Nneka the Pretty Serpent slaps hard. The film follows two different men whose lives are turned upside down when they start cheating on their partners with Nneka, a woman who was born after a chicken was sacrificed — it’s a long story, just read this recap

How to survive this film: Keep your penis in one place. If you don’t go cheating up and down like a harlot, there’s a high chance you’ll be fine.

    Mark of the Beast

In Mark of the Beast, Satan sends his son to come fuck things up for the people on earth. But honestly, the whole wahala started because Enebeli Elebuwa lost his baby and decided to exchange it with a random baby at the hospital behind his wife’s back.

How to survive this film: Don’t take random babies from the hospital. Adoption is great, but follow the appropriate process to avoid hot tears.

    Full Moon

In Full Moon, Regina Askia plays Lucy, a discount version of Storm from X-Men, who gets her power from the moon and turns her uncles into pillars of salt just like Lot’s wife. They’re not innocent, though. These men killed her parents all because they wanted the family’s oil-rich land for themselves.

How to survive this film: Don’t be the greedy fool who kills their brother because you want to sell their land to a coloniser. Blood is thicker than oil — I think.

    Living in Bondage

Living in Bondage follows Andy, played by Kenneth Okonkwo, who is poor AF and deeply frustrated by his life in the trenches — this was before Buhari, by the way. To solve his problems, he joins a cult and sacrifices his loyal girlfriend, Merit, for unlimited funds. Like every other Nollywood film, Andy’s life starts turning on its own after the sacrifice is completed.

How to survive this film: Don’t marry a poor man with potential, to avoid getting used for blood sacrifice. It’s as easy as one, two, three.

    Igodo

Igodo is the male version of Egg of Life. The film follows a group of men who venture into the evil forest to get a magical cutlass that will put an end to the deaths in their village. Long story short, only one man makes it out alive.

How to survive this film: Pack your load and run when people start dying in your village. I’m sure that’s not the only village in the fictional state. Run before they nominate you to go into the evil forest.

    The Oracle

The Oracle follows Old Nollywood panty-droppers, Saint Obi, Ejike Asiegbu and Charles Okafor as armed robbers. Their lives start to go downhill after they steal an old statue and sell it to a Filipino man cosplaying as white.

How to survive this film: Don’t play with spiritual statues or figurines. Why are you stealing something from a shrine at your big age?

    Witches

Witches is about a woman named Princess, played by Liz Benson. After abandoning her fabulous witch coven because of a man, she ends up barren and eventually stuck with a demon baby. The film is even more iconic because of this chaotic accident scene that lives rent free in my head:

How to survive this film: If you want to survive Witches, I’d advise you to avoid men and cling to your coven. You can’t eat your cake and have it.

    End of the Wicked

End of the Wicked just has a lot of wild things going on for no reason. From kids eating a man’s spinal cord, a woman conjuring a penis to rape her daughter-in-law, to a dog eating someone’s womb and Alex Osifo drinking blood like it’s jolly juice — it probably was.

How to survive this film: Omo, you’re on your own. I have absolutely no idea.

  • Prove you know Nigerian pop history by acing this quiz.

  • What makes a sad song sad? Is it lyrics about heartbreak and pain like P-Square’s Omoge Mi or slow-tempo productions like Darey Art Alade’s Not The Girl? If you said both, then you’re absolutely correct.

Men making sad boy music has been a thing for a long time, but there’s something about 2022’s releases that’s been overwhelmingly sad… but still danceable.

    Burna Boy

“E don cast. Last last, na everybody go chop breakfast,” from Burna Boy’s Last Last has soundtracked everything from weddings to sold-out concerts this year. Reminiscent of his 2018 hit, Ye, Last Last has become an anthem everyone is obsessed with. But the truth is, we’ve turned two of Odogwu’s darkest periods into club songs sung over red cups and shisha.

Last Last allegedly talks about Burna Boy’s break up with British rapper, Stefflon Don: “Maybe another time, maybe another life, you’d be wife, and we’d get it right”, and an accident he had in February 2022: “Now, you crash your Ferrari for Lekki, Burna. Na small thing remain, could’ve been all over”. Taking a break from ego-fueled hits, Burna Boy leaned into his vulnerable side for this song, and it totally paid off.

But Last Last isn’t the only sad song on his album, Love Damini. Despite the misleading dance beat, Burna wonders if anything he does will ever be enough on It’s Plenty. He sings about his struggles with mental health and coming out of a bad place on How Bad Could It Be? And on the album’s outro, Love Damini, he goes into full self-drag mode, talking about his anger issues and not reaching out to the people in his life.

With songs like these, Love Damini may just be Burna’s most personal album yet, and the record that started this year’s sad boy era of music.

RECOMMENDED: Do We Love Burna Boy’s “Love, Damini”?

    Omah Lay

Unlike baking banana bread and wearing face masks, Omah Lay’s music is one thing we’ve not shaken off since the Covid-19-induced lockdown of 2020.

With a fresh trap and R&B-influenced sound, Omah Lay’s Get Layd EP and singles, Bad Influence and Damn made him a household name in the same year artists like Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and Burna Boy all dropped career-defining albums. While his EP revealed an artist deeply connected to his emotions, it wasn’t until 2021’s Understand with lyrics like: “I thought we in this together. Give you my necklace pendant. Give you my last card, you spend am. I show you my best friend, you friend am,” that shit started to get real.

By the time his debut album, Boy Alone (omo, even the title says it all), dropped, it was clear Omah Lay was in his full emo phase.

The album’s opening track, Recognize, finds Omah Lay trying to convince himself he’s made for fame. Alcohol, as a tool to escape imposter syndrome and loneliness, is the theme of I’m a Mess. And by the time the album’s closer, Purple Song, rolls out, Omah Lay has gone through the motions of heartbreak, loss and redemption in under 40 minutes.

RECOMMENDED: Omah Lay’s Emotions Take Centre Stage on “Boy Alone”

    Yinka Bernie

Closing out sad boy era, for now, is one of the alté scene’s secret weapons, Yinka Bernie.

Probably one of the most vulnerable projects on this list (and of the year), Yinka Bernie’s Something New EP is introspective and deeply moving. There’s something soothing about his vocals and melody that makes you feel his every emotion on that song even before you really understand the lyrics.

Opening with Who Do You Call?, Yinka asks the question over and over again, as if waiting for you to provide a clear answer, before ending with “You can call me.” In a time when we’re interrogating who men talk to when times get rough, this song feels very apt and necessary.

Closing out the 12-minute EP, Yinka Bernie reminds us It’s Okay to Cry, with backing vocals from Joyce Olong. This song is where Yinka is most vulnerable, singing lines like: “Every time I think about death, I drown. You see your friends progress while you stuck”. Despite being so raw with his fears and doubts, Yinka manages to make the song calming and reassuring for his listeners. When he ends the song with “Breathe in. Breathe out,” you almost find yourself following his instructions.

We need more sad boy music

As someone who thrives on sad music, I enjoyed these albums and appreciated the artists’ decision to be as vulnerable as possible. Listening to these songs is like reading entries from their diaries.

With 2022 coming to an end, I’m hopeful for some more sad boy music. No, I’m not a masochist. I just enjoy being in my feelings, no matter how dark they are.
