Check Out the 20 Best Nollywood Movies on Netflix Right Now (Oct. 2024)

  • It’s been a minute since Nollywood dropped a campus flick that actually hits the spot. For a very long stretch in the 2000s, before the story of Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore forever changed our taste, campus movies with the biggest babes on campus—Rita Dominic, Ini Edo, Oge Okoye—fighting over men, fighting off men, fighting for men was the shit.

So, while we wait for the next big campus movie to drop in this new era of cinema and streaming, let’s revisit some of the classics that got us hooked on this whole “campus life” thing in the first place.

From the romantic to the hilarious, the thrilling and the heart-wrenching, these 10 Nollywood campus movies are sure to take you back to your childhood or steam up some memories of your uni days.

    Omoge Campus (2001)

Bola Igida, a film producer, cast actors like Dele Odule, Jide Kosoko, the late Ayisat Abimbola and Moji Olaiya in Omoge Campus (meaning “campus baddies”). It’s a film about a fearsome female cult group, Omoge Campus, that uses its influence to navigate paths for its members through uni. From being victims of sex for grades to dealing with difficult lecturers and other cult groups to initiating other unsuspecting babes, this film promotes a very stereotypical “inside life” story of a Nigerian uni.

    O Le Ku (1997)

A final year guy in the University of Ibadan called Ajani, who faces marriage pressure from his mom, finds himself dating three babes at the same time. But he must choose his wife. It features actors such as Yemi Shodimu, Pauline Dike, Omolola Amusan and Lanre Hassan.

    A Million Tears (2006)

This is one of the most tear-jerking productions from Nollywood. Emeka Ike is a lover boy who falls for a dying girl portrayed by Kate Henshaw. One of Nollywood’s best soundtracks also came from A Million Tears.

    The Campus Queen (2003)

The Campus Queen is another Tunde Kelani classic. It tells the story of two rival university social groups going at each other. The feud starts after a group defends Banke, a student, against her popular boyfriend who mistreats her. Sarah Mbaka, Segun Adefila and the late Sound Sultan are stars in the film.

    Arrested by Love (2004)

Jim Iyke, a trust fund kid, falls in love with a God-fearing babe. If you’re looking for a simple love story on a Nigerian campus, Arrested by Love does it. Pete Edochie, and Ebube Nwagbo are also featured in Arrested by Love.

    War Game (2005)

War Game is in a league of its own. To date, there’s no Nollywood film with scarier character names like Tornado Aroma the Basanta, Silence the Escobar and Terror the Archangel. It’s an action-packed film about rival gangs disturbing the school, terrorising other students and putting fear in everyone on the campus. Ini Edo, Oge Okoye, Kelvin Ikeduba, Nonso Diobi delivered stellar roles. FYI, it has part two.

    Black Bra (2005)

A guy claims he loves a babe in the female cult Black Bra, then rapes her. The Black Bra cult heard what had happened to their member and a revenge mission began. Watch Nonso Diobi, Adaora Ukoh, Uche Jumbo and Oge Okoye in action.

    Girls Cot (2006)

A struggling university babe (Rita Dominic) gets into sex work to make ends meet, but she’s stuck with horrible customers. Eventually, she becomes one of the happening babes alongside Uche Jumbo, Ini Edo, and Genevieve Nnaji on her campus.

    Jenifa (2008)

Funke Akindele’s Jenifa brings humour to the campus. Jenifa is a village girl in the university who made all the wrong decisions. The film became so huge, it started its own “Jeni-verse,” —The Return of Jenifa, Jenifa’s Diary, Everybody Love Jenifa. To some Nollywood lovers, Jenifa may be the last good campus story from Nollywood.

    Citation (2020)

Citation is about a female master’s degree student who takes a university to court after a professor attempts to rape her. The film stars Joke Silva, Temi Otedola, Jimmy Jean-Louis and Ini Edo.

This is an historical epic about Lisabi, a farmer, who raised a resistance movement to protect his town, Egba, and its people from oppressions. If features actors such as Lateef Adedimeji, Mr Macaroni and Odunlade Adekola.

  • Lisabi: The Uprising is the latest Nollywood epic production on Netflix. It’s a historical feature that follows a farmer from Egba (a place in Ogun State) who built a local resistance movement against the old Oyo Empire’s oppression. The film’s production comes from the stable of Niyi Akinmolayan’s Anthill Studios and stars veteran and new actors such as Jide Kosoko, Odunlade Adekola, Efe Irele, Liquorous Afije, etc.

In the movie, Ibrahim Chatta (Sangodeyin) and Lateef Adedimeji (Lisabi) had scores to settle, but we had other lessons to pick from it.

These are the seven lessons we’re taking from Lisabi:

The Old Oyo Empire feels like Nigeria

Oloyo could cut off the head of another king or burn a village to the ground over tributes (a share of what people harvest from their farms). Oloyo would take from them without giving any in return. It’s just like present day Nigeria with powerful leaders, their yes-men, and the sufferhead citizens. Just look at Oloyo and his subjects.

    Don’t play with your job

If you have to work because you want to impress someone, there’s a high chance you won’t make it out of the trenches. It might have worked for Osokenu, but if you don’t work, nothing for you.

    Protect your own

It’s justifiable to go to war for your loved ones like Osokenu did for his babe Abebi, and Lisabi did to fight against their village’s oppressors.

    Rise against tyranny

Don’t wait until your tormentor pushes beyond the wall before you fight back for your right. No one will do it for you. You have to yourself, like Egba, revolted against Oyo.

    There’s strength in community

The people of Egba needed to produce more food because the Oloyo tribute collectors were taking too much from them. Lisabi suggested that everyone in the village should work on each other’s farms to increase planting and yields. When the harvesting period came, it was bountiful.

    One good turn deserves another

Despite the Alake of Egba’s instruction that Lisabi and others should stop the teamwork on farmlands, some picked up their tools and called Lisabi to work on his farm. Although he rejected the offer, it was a way of supporting Lisabi after his collective farming idea proved brilliant and kept food in their barns.

    You’re bigger than your problems

Lisabi fought the dreaded leader of the tribute collectors and he didn’t only whoop his ass, he took his head home. Other Egba people took out their weapons to fight oppression too.

We Compiled a List of the The Latest Yoruba Movies You Should See in 2024

  • If you’ve seen any of the promotional videos for actress and film producer Funke Akindele’s upcoming film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, it’s not hard to conclude that she’s coming for her December money, per usual. As another year draws to an end, she’s outside again, gearing up to collect another highest-grossing box office plaque. Before you ask, “Who dash her?” Remember she’s broken the highest-grossing Nollywood film record three different times — Omo Ghetto (2020), Battle on Buka Street (2022) and A Tribe Called Judah (2023).

Anyway, from the look of her latest film promos, she’s likely to have another box-office banger. Since we also had time, we watched and ranked all her film promo videos.

    Everybody Loves Jenifa

We have to start with the one that’s currently dominating our timeline. The promo videos for the upcoming Akindele film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, is a funny face-off between the casts of A Tribe Called Judah and the new film. For this new film, Akindele is pushing even further, offering back-to-back content of the cast talking about it. So far, she has delivered transition videos and a very viral video of the cast agitating, sort of.

    Finding Me

The idea for the Finding Me promo video is playfulness. Some popular cast members got goofy and displayed their dance moves and baffs in the short transition videos. Who knew Dele Odule could carry body like that?

    A Tribe Called Judah

As soon as a release date for A Tribe Called Judah (ATCJ) was announced last year, Akindele rolled out in colourful merch, decked with customised round necks, hats, and sneakers. There was also a lot of goofing around and dancing in the videos because, seriously, what’s an Aunty Funke promo video without some goofiness and dancing?

    Battle of Buka Street

This film is about two rival local food sellers on the same street. For this, Akindele tapped into her inner Iya ‘Mala. Its promo videos starred Akindele and other actresses turning hot Amala and tearing meat to spark joy.

    SHE Must Be Obeyed

For this, the goal was to flood YouTube with targeting advertising. She pulled a “Are you a stem professional…” advert times four. But with the Prime Video original series SHE Must Be Obeyed, it was less nuisance and more skip me if e sure for you

    Akorede

The promo for one of Akindele’s oldies, Akorede, was off social media as it was released in the golden age of Facebook. But this didn’t stop Akindele from blasting it everywhere. Remember those days when films were advertised in films and you had to watch tons of trailers before you finally watched the film? Akorede was one of the leaders of that charge. That year the trailer for Akorede with Akindele singing mo ti ko re de was in almost every film.
