  • Onyinye Odokoro

Award-winning filmmaker Chioma Paul-Dike has officially commenced production on her feature-length debut, Oblation, under the banner of Two Shoes Media Production. The film, steeped in African mysticism and suspense, builds upon her AFRIFF 2023 short film Dreams and begins principal photography in January 2025.

Oblation tells the haunting story of Nelo, a heavily pregnant woman tormented by vivid nightmares of an unknown presence warning her to leave her ancestral home. As her dreams blur into reality, she is forced to confront long-buried secrets in a gripping battle for survival.

    Chioma Paul-Dike

Speaking on her vision for the film, Chioma Paul-Dike said: “I am a staunch enthusiast of the horror genre, having watched and enjoyed many horror films like Chucky, Karashika, The Conjuring, Mark of the Beast, Egg of Life, and The Bye Bye Man, amongst others. That has led to me being always drawn to stories rooted in African spirituality and culture. Horror is a universal genre, but I believe African myths bring a unique richness to the storytelling.”

The project features a standout ensemble cast, including Onyinye Odokoro in the lead role, supported by Nollywood stars Kelechi Udegbe, Chioma Chukwuka, Bucci Franklin, Ebere Okaro, Amanda Oruh, Ruby Akubueze, Lilian Echelon Mbadiwe, Paul Nnadiekwe, and Iyke Ndubuisi.

    Chioma Chukwuka

Scheduled to wrap by late January, Oblation will enter post-production from February through April 2025. The film is set to premiere on the international festival circuit mid-year, culminating in a global release in November.

As a filmmaker, Chioma Paul-Dike continues to do her part for African storytelling. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti

Bolanle Austen-Peters’ biopic, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, based on the life of the iconic activist, is as relevant today as it would have been in the early 20th century, when it is set. Themes of unjust taxation, government oppression, and a populace conditioned to endure subjugation remain strikingly familiar.

Beyond these timeless tropes, the film offers a fresh and compelling exploration of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s life, portraying her not just as an educator and activist but also as a wife, mother, and fearless pioneer of “good trouble”—a perspective far richer than any Social Studies class could provide.

Directed by The Agbajowo Collective, The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos is a powerful drama that brings attention to the plight of the Otodo-Gbame settlement, a slum community in Lagos that was forcibly demolished in 2017, displacing over 30,000 people. The film follows a young single mother who stumbles upon a bag of cash, viewing it as her chance for a better life.

However, her escape from poverty is threatened when corrupt politicians manipulate members of the community to settle old scores. The film explores themes of survival, corruption, and social injustice in contemporary Lagos. The cast includes Teniola Aladese, Temiloluwa Ami-Williams, Gerard Avlessi, and Kachi Okechukwu.

    Farmer’s Bride

As is often the case in Nollywood dramas, sparks fly when she crosses paths with Femi, the farmer’s young university-dropout nephew, leading to a forbidden romance that unravels their lives and sets the stage for a gripping tale.

As the story unfolds, Funmi falls deeply in love with Femi, but tragedy strikes. In her village, strict customs dictate that if a child’s paternity is questioned, the baby’s life is forfeit, and the mother faces severe consequences. This shocking turn of events pits Funmi against her community with devastating stakes.

The cast are Wumi Toriola, Tobi Bakre, Mercy Aigbe, Efe Irele, Ayako Kirishima, Femi Branch, Gaichi Kôno, and Gbubemi Ejeye.

    Christmas in Lagos

Jade Osiberu’s latest Prime Video original, Christmas in Lagos, is a dazzling exploration of love, friendship, and self-discovery set against a backdrop of Lagosian opulence and flair.

The story centres on Fiyin (Teniola Aladese), a young woman navigating unrequited love for her best friend, Elo (Shalom C. Obiago). Elo’s return from the U.S. to propose to his girlfriend, Yagazie (Angel Anosike), sets off a chain of emotional events. In her pursuit of Elo’s affection, Fiyin tests their friendship and the foundation of Elo and Yagazie’s relationship, leading to revelations that change everything.

  • We know it’s a bit of a stretch to ask Nollywood to get everything right, but can they at least nail the casting? Whose bright idea was it to cast Kate Henshaw and Deyemi Okanlawon as mother and son, for example?

Anyway, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to rank some of the most iconic (and questionable) mother-son duos in Nollywood. Thank goodness for pairings like Tiwa Savage and Olumide Oworu from MTV Shuga, or this list would’ve been a total disaster.

Ireti Doyle and Banky W in “The Wedding Party”

Here’s the thing: Banky W had more drama than any calm, bad-and-boujee mum like Ireti Doyle could ever manage. Honestly, Sola Sobowale would’ve been a better fit for the role—imagine the chaos she would’ve brought. While Ireti gave what she was supposed to give, it was hard to buy into the idea that Banky fell out of her derrière.

    Ranking: Ate, but barely.

Kate Henshaw and Deyemi Okanlawon in “Blood Sisters”

Look, Blood Sisters was groundbreaking in many ways, but this casting? Absolutely unforgivable. At best, Kate Henshaw and Deyemi Okanlawon should’ve been playing sugar mummy and sugar baby, not mother and son. The vibes were all wrong, and we won’t be taking feedback on this one.

    Ranking: Never again.

Funke Akindele and the Judah Boys in “A Tribe Called Judah”

Yes, the Judah boys loved their mum enough to carry out a heist for her, but love alone couldn’t sell their relationship as a believable mother-son dynamic. Even with all the makeup tricks to make Funke Akindele look older, it was hard to accept her as the mother of these grown AF men. Do better, Nollywood.

    Ranking: Never again.

Sola Sobowale and Ademola Adedoyin in “King of Boys”

If you’re doubting how much chemistry Sola Sobowale and Ademola Adedoyin brought to their roles as mother and son, watch the living room scene where she delivered that bombastic hot slap. Nothing screams “classic Nigerian mother-son dynamic” louder.

Ranking: Ate and left no crumbs.

Tina Mba and Timini Egbuson in “Breaded Life”

Sure, Nollywood has overdone the “rich mummy, spoilt son” trope, but Breaded Life still managed to feel fresh. Tina Mba and Timini Egbuson brought humour and heart to their roles, even throwing in a classic Nigerian mother slap for authenticity. It’s the kind of casting we love to see.

    Ranking: Ate.

     [ad]

Funke Akindele and Ayomide Abatti in “Maami”

If A Tribe Called Judah didn’t sell Funke Akindele’s range as the mum of five grown men, Maami is the palette cleanser you need. You had to be there in 2012 when Funke showed us she wasn’t just Suliya from Ayetoro, and gave a masterful performance as a struggling single mum. Her dynamic with child actor, Ayomide Abatti, was so convincing that people genuinely thought he was her child IRL.

Ranking: Ate, and we’re still full.

Tiwa Savage and Olumide Oworu in “MTV Shuga”

When MTV Shuga cast African Bad Gyal Tiwa Savage as Olumide Oworu’s bougie mum, we knew it would be one for the books. Their chemistry was so cute that Nigerian kids low-key wished they could ask their mums, “Can’t you see your mate?” Tiwa’s sass and Olumide’s relatable charm made this pairing a hit.

Ranking: Ate, and we’re asking for more.
