99% of all the people you’ve ever met probably use WhatsApp. Isn’t that how you keep in close contact with your friends, family, work besties and stay up-to-date with school news? It’s the same app you use to post funny memes and send your ‘auntie’ good morning messages that this 24-year-old is using to make millions monthly.

In this interview, Kita, a WhatsApp marketer, tells us about marketing on WhatsApp and how she went from making ₦6 million in 2021 to ₦20 million in 2025. She spills everything, from managing 200 DMs without losing her mind, to why being a bit extra with videos and landing pages actually works, to building trust in a country where everyone thinks you’re trying to scam them.

Hii, would you please introduce yourself?

Of course! Hii, I’m Kita, a WhatsApp marketer and founder of Kitarific, a marketing agency helping entrepreneurs grow their brands.

Nice to meet you, Kita. When did you first realise you could make serious money selling on WhatsApp?

I actually started making money on WhatsApp accidentally. Initially, I started a YouTube channel and wanted to get the word out that I was teaching people how to get into tech for free. So I reached out to a WhatsApp influencer to teach me.. I didn’t even know I would end up gaining over 1,000 subscribers from various WhatsApp communities.

This influencer taught me how to host a class and generate leads. People loved the free class so much that they told me to create something more detailed, as they were ready to pay. I was doing it for fun at first, but I found myself making ₦300k to ₦400k within the first three months of selling my knowledge.

What strategy do you think drew people’s attention to your products on WhatsApp?

When it comes to selling information, it’s the positioning and marketing that determine whether people will buy or not. This is especially because they can’t see or evaluate the product. So, I’d like to say that my energy when marketing is something that draws attention to me. I really love teaching and sharing knowledge, and people can feel it.

I also have a lot of reviews from past customers and clients, people who have gotten jobs and built businesses from what I teach them. So, naturally, people want to learn from me. When it comes to selling digital products, I am a bit extra. I make videos, I design landing pages, write copies and practice my WhatsApp pitches. I also consistently show up and follow up with interested people. I have systems built around my business that make it easy for me to sell out offers.

That’s amazing, but let’s talk about the actual selling. I mean, building trust online isn’t easy, especially for people selling on WhatsApp. How do you establish credibility with strangers?

This is something that requires content and context. Content gives people information and tools to make decisions about you, so I create relevant, helpful, and interesting content to help me find my own people online. Also, trust takes time to build. It takes some people a few days to trust me enough to buy from me, while some others took three years. It’s also about being willing to play the long game. Posting on my status consistently, replying fast, showing reviews, and sharing my own journey helps. I also try to show people behind the scenes of me working and enjoying life.

Could you walk me through your WhatsApp sales process? From getting leads to closing deals.

Generating leads actually takes months of planning for me because there are so many factors to consider – the flyers, the videos for marketing, the free classes to get the right audience interested. I use free classes on WhatsApp to generate leads, and I can get anywhere from 800 to 1500 people per lead generation. I use influencer marketing and, most recently, Meta ads to generate leads. I do this three to four times a year. We save numbers and host the classes.

Usually, I don’t sell anything in these free classes. And even when I do, I don’t really care if they buy immediately. The actual marketing happens on my WhatsApp status when they get to know me and trust me enough to buy.

How do you handle people who ghost you mid-conversation?

I think it’s okay for people to ghost me. I also ghost people. Life happens, people get carried away. The key is following up until they give me a definite no. Most times, I get a yes, and when I do get a no, I just recommend something else.

My entire process relies on generating the right leads, giving people time to feel like part of the community, and building hot offers that solve their actual business problems. I teach this in my WhatsApp marketing course called Secrets of a Crazy Entrepreneur. It’s a strategy that works across different niches.

This all sounds like serious business. How do you handle personalisation when you’re dealing with so many potential customers?

This actually got really hard as my business started to grow, especially last year. So this year, I invested in a CRM and started email marketing. I also started to train salespeople. I use broadcasts for marketing, and I write my copy in a way that feels personal for WhatsApp. I also do the same thing when marketing on my WhatsApp status. But for big launches, we use BCs and my status. This year, we leaned into email marketing, and the response has been great from my community.

What’s the most difficult part of selling on WhatsApp?

The hardest part used to be saving numbers and replying to messages. When I’m super active online, I get anywhere between 100 and 200 messages. But it got easier when I set up my website and hired an assistant. Besides that, it doesn’t really feel like work because I love doing it. It’s also easier than most business models.

It does sound interesting. How many products have you sold on WhatsApp since you started out, and how much have you made since then?

I have sold about 15 digital products. In my first year, I did ₦6 million and about ₦20 million last year. Who knows what we’ll do this year? The highest amount I’ve made in a month from selling on WhatsApp in a single month is about ₦2.5 million. I think I had launched a ₦40k product that month.

Whoa! I’m sure many people don’t realise that WhatsApp can be used to make this much money. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to get into WhatsApp marketing?

I think the best place to start is investing in a good coach or mentor. I have had four mentors who taught me different parts of building my business. After this, there are important skills that you’d have to learn: Lead generation, to get customers; offer creation, to make your products interesting enough for people to buy it; community building, to get people to trust you and feel like they’re part of something big; content creation, to provide them with as much information as they need to know, like and trust you; DM sales closing and, strategy creation, to build business plans that work for the short term and long term.

These are the most important skills in the beginning. They work regardless of your industry. I just happen to sell digital products on WhatsApp; it wouldn’t matter if I were selling hair or shoes, I would still need to know the same things. I also have a book called Monetise Your Mind that essentially documents my journey from when I got into marketing and how I have thrived so successfully.
