• You know what’s almost as good as a cold bottle of water on a hot dancefloor? A glass of your favourite Hennessy cocktail. We asked ten Nigerians to share their favourite Hennessy-inspired or infused cocktails, and these combinations will not only blow your mind, they’ll ignite your taste buds. Which of these are you going to try?

“Just give me my red cup, Henny and a Coke” — Emeka*, 32, M

“I love a classic Hennessy and Coke mix before a night out. It’s sweet but has a nice kick. A splash of Hennessy in a glass, and top it off with some coke. It sets a great tone for the rest of the night. Once your boys bust out the Hennessy, you know we’re trying to have a great time.”

“Hennessy and ginger beer will take you there” — Biodun*, 25, F

“I love experimenting with my drinks. One day at a house party.  I had a cup of ginger beer, and someone brought out a bottle of Hennessy. I didn’t want to say no or pour out my drink, so I asked him to give me a few splashes of the Henny. Best thing I’ve ever tasted. It had the fizziness of the ginger beer and the zing of the ginger, but the Hennessy flavour still came through. I mix this cocktail whenever I can get my hands on it.”

    “It’s weird, but I like it when I mix Hennessy and a Mojito” — Fred*, 28, M

“My friends look at me weirdly when I do it, but if you want a unique drink, you need to mix Hennessy and a mojito-flavoured drink. It diminishes the flavour of the Hennessy a little, but I promise it’s such a vibe at the start of your evening. It’s like a chill introduction to the rest of the drinks you’ll be having that night.”

“You’re missing out on Hennessy and blackberry juice” — Linda*, 29, F

“I don’t like drinking my liquor neat at all. One night in 2021, I found that I had run out of mixers for my Hennessy, except for some leftover 5Alive berry blast juice. I closed my eyes and mixed them together, and the result was surprisingly pleasant. I have tried sharing this amazing recipe with my friends, but they think it’s sacrilege to mix 5Alive and Hennessy. I think they’re missing out.”

“Hennessy and lemon juice is a personal fave” — George*, 31, M

“I’m a simple man, I don’t like overly complex cocktails, especially if I’m the one cosplaying a mixologist for the night. I love Hennessy with a splash of lemon juice and a hint of mint. It’s simple, delicious and great to serve guests as well.”

“Looking for an easy banger? Hennessy and cranberry juice is the answer” — Bidemi*, 29, F

“I like easy mixes I can recreate anywhere, and the cranberry and Hennessy is exactly that kind of easy. It has a bright tart taste from the cranberry juice, but keeps the full-bodied flavour of Hennessy. It’s my favourite any day.”

“Hennessy and soda water is what I know” — Josh*, 26, M

“I’m still learning how to mix drinks that I like, but Hennessy and soda water is a combo that never misses for me. A shot of Hennessy, a few splashes of soda water, and you get the perfect cocktail every time.”

“I know it’s chaotic, but I like to mix Hennessy and beer” — Chima*, 29, M

“I get judged heavily whenever I do this around my friends, but I like to mix my Hennessy with beer. I don’t know if I like the fizziness, but I think the Hennessy adds a punch to the beer, like adding salt to fries. My friends hate it when I do it, but I don’t care, I think it’s great.”

“If you like a Negroni, you’ll like Hennessy mixed with Campari” — Timothy*, 36, M

“I love Negroni cocktails, and I make them myself at home a lot. When I don’t have all the ingredients, I can still make something similar by mixing Hennessy with a splash of Campari. It gives it that deep bitter taste, followed by the aftertaste of the Hennessy. I love it for a lazy evening at home after work.”

“I like my orange juice with a splash of Hennessy” — Gozie*, 28, F

“I love a cold glass of orange juice and with a splash of Hennessy to give it ‘body’. To make my favourite mix, I usually pour a few packs of Caprisonne in a cup and top it up with some ice and a splash of Hennessy. It’s a cocktail I can only get at home, but it hits the spot every time.”

  • Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey is great on its own, but variety is the spice of life. Sometimes, it’s good to do a little mix and match with your liquor. We’ve taken a look at the ingredients in our fridge, and put together a list of things you can pair with your favourite whiskey to get the best cocktails.

    Sweet chili peppers and lemonade

Yes, Nigeria might be showing you pepper and leaving a sour taste in your mouth, but we promise this drink won’t. Mix the sweet chili peppers and lemons for a spicy, sharp base, and pour in your lemonade and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.

    Recipe:

    • Rim your glass: Take a slice of lemon and rub it around the edge of a highball glass and then dip into Tajin to coat the top of glass.
    • Next, add three-five slices of sweet chilli pepper into the glass. Now, muddle the pepper to squeeze out some of its juices.
    • Put a few slices of lemon into the glass and fill with ice.
    • Then, add two ounces Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, and fill glass with lemonade.

    Lemon juice and mint leaves

Elevate your cocktails by adding lemon juice and mint leaves to your Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey. All you have to do is add everything into a shaker with some ice and watch your little effort yield the best results.

    Recipe:

    • Fill half of a cocktail shaker with ice, then add six-eight mint leaves, half an ounce of lemon juice, half an ounce of a simple syrup, and two ounces of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.
    • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, then strain liquid into a glass with crushed ice.

    Ginger

If you like spice but just can’t see yourself adding sweet chilli peppers to your liquor, then this is for you. Don’t worry, you won’t have to put actual ginger into your glass of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey. All you need are ginger mixers – any ginger drink you can lay your hands on or the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey ginger perfect serve value pack, and you can give your drink that spicy kick.

    Recipe:

    • Fill 3/4 a glass with cubed ice.
    • Pour Jack Honey over ice then top with Schweppes ginger.
    • Stir gently for 10 seconds and add lime wedge to garnish.

    Apple juice

If you have a sweet tooth, then this is for you. Apple juice pairs well with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey for a sweeter taste with a fruity undertone.

    Recipe:

    • Pour the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey into a glass filled with ice, then add apple juice and stir.
    • Fill to the top with more ice and garnish with an apple wedge.

    Sprite

If you’re a big fan of Jack and Coke, but you want your drink sweeter and lighter, then this is for you. Add a lemon wedge to this, and enjoy your drink.

    Recipe:

    • Pour Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey in an ice-filled glass.
    • Add Sprite to taste then garnish with a lemon slice.

  • I always thought zobo was bland. Like, how do people enjoy the burning sensation that courses through their digestive systems with just one sip?

But then, I discovered these options. And let’s just say, I’m onboard the zobo train now. Try some of the best flavors of zobo and thank me later.

    1. Zobo with pineapple and ginger

Most people already add ginger to their zobo — hence, the burning sensation — but you need something to balance out the sharpness, and pineapple works great.

    Recipe:

    • Wash a cup of zobo leaves in warm water, and put into a pot of two litres of water.
    • Add a tablespoon of grated ginger and a cup of pineapple concentrate (or whole pineapple peels). Allow this to boil for about 25 minutes.
    • Add some sugar (depending on how sweet you want it), stir well and allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes.
    • Drain with a fine-mesh strainer into another container to get rid of any particles, and allow it to cool before refrigerating.
    • Garnish with citrus fruits to serve, for extra pizzazz, and enjoy.

    2. Mixed-fruit Zobo

Why have one fruit when you can have multiple? TBH, mixed-fruit zobo is giving Chapman, but I don’t hate it.

    Recipe:

    • Make the zobo drink with the recipe above but with less pineapple and sugar to make room for the other fruits.
    • Blend half of a medium watermelon, blend a mango to make a smooth pulp and juice two oranges.
    • Sieve the watermelon and mango pulp to remove the particles.
    • Add all three to your zobo drink and refrigerate (Warm zobo tastes like tears).
    • For the complete Chapman look, add the cut-up pieces of fruit when you serve the zobo.

Something for the raging alcoholics too, of course.

    Recipe:

    • Make your zobo drink. Cold, of course.
    • Rim a cocktail glass with salt and place in the fridge to chill.
    • Put ice in a cocktail shaker with half a cup of zobo, a shot of tequila and two tablespoons of lemon juice. Shake vigorously for a couple of minutes.
    • Pour into the chilled salt-rimmed glass, and serve immediately.

    4. Zobo and watermelon smoothie

For when a plain watermelon smoothie just won’t cut it.

    Recipe:

    • Cut a small watermelon into cubes, and throw in a blender with half a cup of milk or yoghurt and two tablespoons of lemon juice. Blend together with half a cup of ice until smooth.
    • Pour into half a cup of cold zobo (preferably sweetened with pineapple), mix well and serve.

    5. Zobo and unsweetened yoghurt

This zobo and yoghurt dessert is technically a drink. Don’t you drink some types of yoghurt? I don’t make the rules.

    Recipe:

    • Mix some unsweetened yoghurt in a bowl and add some condensed milk to sweeten it.
    • Transfer the mixture into a dessert cup and place in a fridge so the yoghurt can set.
    • Dissolve some gelatin in hot water. The quantity of gelatin depends on how much zobo syrup you have, but one or two tablespoons should suffice.
    • When completely dissolved, stir in the zobo syrup and allow it to cool.
    • Pour the mixture over the yoghurt you prepared earlier, and garnish with any fruit of your choice.

    6. Zobo lemonade

This is the lemon version of the pineapple recipe.

    Recipe:

    • Prepare your zobo drink without pineapple concentrate.
    • In a separate pot, add sugar and a cup of water. Boil and stir to dissolve the sugar.
    • Cool the sugar mixture in the fridge, then mix in a cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and you have your lemonade.
    • Next, mix the lemonade with the zobo, refrigerate and serve chilled.

    7. Zobo, banana and dates smoothie

If you can’t tell I love smoothies at this point, I don’t know what to say. But you’ll love this one.

    Recipe:

    • Prepare your zobo drink.
    • Soak half a cup of dates in water for an hour to soften it.
    • Dice two or three frozen bananas into a blender. Add the dates and half a cup of milk or yoghurt. Blend until smooth.
    • Pour the blended mixture into a bowl, and mix in the zobo drink.
    • Serve and enjoy.
