• If Mercury somersaults seven times in retrograde, it’s possible that Nigeria may end up with a 102-year-old woman as president in 2023.

We swear that this is a real thing.

102-year-old Nonye Josephine Ezeanyaeche announced on February 17, 2022 that she’s preparing to run against others contesting in the 2023 presidential election.

This aspirant already has a manifesto that she personally put together and cannot wait to get started.

Now, we don’t discriminate, and while you can be too young to run for president, there’s nothing in the constitution about being too old to run.

So we are putting the best argument forward for why Mama E, as we shall now call her, may be the best choice for Nigeria in 2023.

She will make history as Nigeria’s first female president

This is an easy one. Nigeria has never had the good luck of being led by a woman, and Mama E instantly becomes a record-breaker.

Also, we get to brag that we’re more progressive than the United States of America that cannot seem to elect a female president — even when the alternative was an overexposed orange peel.

    Nigeria’s debt cancelled

China and all of Nigeria’s foreign lenders can forget about getting their money back because what Nigerian woman is repaying a debt she was not responsible for?

That’s automatic debt cancellation, and we can all party like it’s October 1, 1960 all over again.

    Nobody doubts her age

Our current president and some of the aspirants that want to take over from him have had too many controversies about how old they really are.

Mama E is 102 years old. Nobody doubts it, and that’s one less controversy to distract Nigerians.

    She has seen Nigeria’s future

What a child cannot see standing on the tallest tree, an old person can see from their verandah stool.

There’s no good reason for Mama E to run at her age if she doesn’t already see good things in Nigeria’s future.

    She is impossible to intimidate

When Bubu unavoidably has those corruption allegations filed against him after leaving office, Mama E can recreate this:

And even though we really dig the principle of separation of powers in government, we know she is capable of telling everyone at the National Assembly to kneel down, raise their hands and close their eyes any time they try to pad the budget.

She will not steal our money

What does a 102-year-old woman need to steal money for?

We’re thinking maybe wall clocks, coffee mugs customised with pictures of her children’s faces and PS5 for the great-great-great-grandchildren. Nothing crazy

She is old enough to send Queen Elizabeth on errands

This instantly boosts our relationship with the United Kingdom, and we can start ordering pizza from London again — something this current government didn’t like.

    She will be focused

How many 102-year-olds do you know that have longtime friends that are still alive to distract them? Not a lot, if you think about it.

This means Madam President will focus on the job she’s elected to do.

No time for friends, doing focused work.

We do have one little concern

We know we cannot ever trust Nigerian politicians to have zero bad habits.

At 102, we don’t expect Mama E is the kind of president that has any sort of patience for this pressing phone generation.

Any time an anonymous account on Twitter calls her incompetent, NEPA will switch off the internet for five business days.

Everybody should go outside and play.

  • Nigerians will go to the polls to elect a new president exactly one year from today on February 18, 2023 — if a zombie apocalypse doesn’t consume all life on earth before then.

It’s a day that kicks off the 2023 elections and will define the country’s future for the next four years.

Election season is serious business in Nigeria, and we’re slowly easing into it with all the drama around zoning, youth inclusion, and a pee scandal — but we don’t talk about the pee scandal.

Bola Tinubu is one of the frontrunners for the 2023 Elections

As a Nigerian of voting age, there’s a weight of responsibility on your shoulders that should be taken as seriously as signing a work contract.

With one full year of preparation, what do you need to do between now and next February to make the best choice for yourself and the country?

    We’re here to help.

    Register for your PVC

You need your PVC for active participation in the 2023 Elections

A voter without a permanent voter card (PVC) is like a train without an engine.

You can only remember where that tune is from if you’re at least 40 years old.

If you’re over 18 years old or sure to turn 18 before June 2022, you should start the registration process for your PVC after reading this, if you haven’t.

Nigeria has just over 84 million registered voters as of today, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) set a target in 2021 to register 20 million new voters before the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise is paused in June 2022.

With only four months to go, only about 3.1 million people have fully registered for their PVC.

Only about 3.1 million new voters have registered for PVCs ahead of the 2023 Elections

INEC is off its target by over 80%.

The very first step to becoming a responsible voter is to arm yourself with the only thing that can make your voice heard.

    Dust your PVC

A presidential aspirant that shall not be named recently goofed and told his supporters to go register for new PVCs because the ones they currently hold have expired.

Bola Tinubu is one of the frontrunners for the 2023 Elections

    This guy, again.

It’s the kind of broadcast message your aunty sends you at 4 am alongside Bible verses.

But as you have already been told by INEC, that panic message is as true as bail is free.

What we can advise is that you should make sure your PVC is in good working condition, or that you even still have it.

If your PVC is lost or damaged or needs to have its records updated, this is the time to fix all that before the CVR is paused in June.

    Transfer to your closest location

Nigerian voting laws are still Living in Bondage, which is why your PVC is only useful in the specific polling unit you are registered.

If you have changed your residential location since the last election, it means you also have to transfer your PVC information to the nearest polling unit.

INEC also created over 50,000 new polling units last year to move voting centres closer to the people.

This means that even if you didn’t move locations, you can transfer your PVC record to a polling unit that’s possibly closer to you than before.

You can start the transfer process here.

    Join a party

This is not absolutely necessary to do as a voter, but it’s not the worst idea in the world.

Find a party that aligns with your ideas, and contribute to its internal processes.

Direct elections are likely to be popular ahead of the 2023 elections. This makes it possible for you to have a direct impact on what candidates your party presents for the elections.

    Pay close attention

No one does election campaign drama better than Nigerian politicians.

They will do this again for the 2023 Elections

They are proof that characters that have come to steal, kill, and destroy also have the audacity to be entertaining.

Watch out for all the theatrics for the 2023 Elections

    Exhibit #94,906,949,305

Campaign season means there’s a lot going on to sell you on candidates and what they’re capable of if elected. It’s all a game and you have to play.

It’s your responsibility as a voter to open your eyes and ears to what they show and tell you.

Try to learn as much as you can about candidates and what they stand for, stood for, and are capable of.

Don’t fall for fake news, and don’t share fake news like your WhatsApp uncles and aunties.

Don’t sell your vote. It’s an actual crime.

    Stick with us

Zikoko Citizen will help you to navigate all the hard work needed to make the best choice for the 2023 elections.

Only an informed voter can make an informed choice and we’re committed to helping you with that by cutting out the noise.

    Update

INEC has announced a new date for the presidential election after the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

The new date is February 25, 2023.

  • There are many ways that political candidates emerge before elections in Nigeria.

It is impossible to cover them all but the most common is when they open their mouth and just say they are interested.

Some others, who are a bit more dramatic, set up groups to beg them publicly to run for office. The groups sometimes even threaten to sue the aspirant if they fail to run, just to spice things up.

And then there are those who announce publicly that they are still waiting for a sign from God.

One of those people is the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Meffy’s name popped up in the running for the 2023 presidential election last week when a group called on him to contest.

The Green Alliance (TGA), surprisingly not environmental activists, anointed our very own Meffy as the man for the job.

    Why?

Convener of the group, Wale Fapohunda, told journalists in Lagos that Emefiele has navigated Nigeria through economic hurdles and come out on top.

He is considered the perfect fit for president because he has supported job creation and fostered inclusive growth in Nigeria.

Also, let us not forget that he is a ‘detribalised’ Nigerian, the magic touch for anyone thinking about becoming president.

TGA also said Nigerians need to move away from career politicians and run into the loving arms of a technocrat that has built a resilient financial system for Nigeria.

Godwin Emefiele has been doing a great job according to his supporters

Never mind that our financial system is as resilient as a blown-up balloon

It is easy to forget that this is the same man under whose economic direction the country has endured a messy foreign exchange situation, two biting recessions, and record inflation and unemployment rates.

    What does Godwin Emefiele want?

Typically, this is the point where the proposed aspirant publicly addresses the call for them to run.

But in Meffy’s case, we have to go through another group.

The Friends of Godwin Emefiele group met with him this week to address the rumour of his run because that is what good friends do.

Meffy apparently talked about how has never asked or lobbied for a job before in his life.

He just went with the tide and ended up in top positions in the banking industry until he arrived at the CBN in 2014, all without lobbying.

The gist of the meeting is the man himself said he is focused on his CBN job, and refused to address his intention to run or not.

He has decided to leave his fate ‘firmly in the hands of God’ because that is the only person that anoints leaders.

Godwin Emefiele will not confirm or deny a run for the Presidency in 2023

What is funny here is if Meffy eventually decides to run based on God’s word, he would have to go head-to-head against another aspirant already promised by God.

After the meeting, the Friends of Godwin Emefiele group published this:

Godwin Emefiele is leaving his Presidency fate in God's hands

    Achoo

We do not know who is afraid of Godwin Emefiele, but we know it is not double-digit inflation, or the naira-dollar exchange rate.
