• It’s officially the end of 2024, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the creatives who made social media fun and unforgettable this year. We’re shining the spotlight on the top five Nigerian creators who owned 2024.

    These creatives have demonstrated exceptional talent, innovative thinking, and a passion for storytelling. So, who made the cut?

    Asherkine

    Anytime you open a video, and the first thing you hear is “Wagwan, gang”, you’re about to watch a person’s life get positively touched by Asherkine. He goes around cities and universities in Nigeria to pick a random person to buy their needs and wants, without any strings attached. He just goes around spreading positive vibes. 

    Asherkine’s gifting content has become so popular that many Nigerians now dream of running into him during one of his giveaway sessions to receive their own share of blessings. It’s fair to say that Asherkine is like a Santa Claus for all seasons.

    Layi Wasabi

    What an eventful year 2024 has been for comedian and content creator Layi Wasabi! Known for his hilarious and relatable skits, Layi brought his unique perspective to life by portraying characters like a project defence student, a lawyer, a Ponzi scheme marketer, a policeman, and more. Each sketch is packed with sharp humour and scenarios that resonate with his audience. Layi also influenced pop culture with quotes like “Info leyan fin fo,” “Hard work pays but minimum wage,” “You will do jail o,” and many more. His brilliance has landed him in Nollywood productions such as Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, Everybody Loves Jenifa and Japa

    Korty EO

    YouTuber and filmmaker Korty EO is one of the top-leading Nigerian creatives telling the stories of young people. From interviews with celebrities to dating and matchmaking shows, Korty makes engaging content for cool kids. This year, she brought our favourite music stars like Tems, Crayon, Layi Wasabi, TG Omori and more, closer to us. She often creates an intimate setting, and comfortable ambience that eases her guests into conversations that can be personal, revealing and at the same time fun AF.

    Gilmore

    Gilmore is a skit maker that’s popular across Instagram, X and TikTok. He makes humorous skits and parodies that often poke fun at everyday Nigerian life, relationships, and societal norms. Gilmore’s content is relatable, entertaining, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Some of his best videos include  “Coachy Lala”, “Agbero Vs Public Transport in Lagos” and “That One Friend that Likes Recording Everything” POVs. 

    He has built a significant online following and is considered a rising star in the Nigerian skit-making scene. He has even kickstarted his own self-directed and produced YouTube show titled “The Struggles of Gilmore”.

    Purple Speedy

    Purple Speedy is a professiona dancer, conten creator and TikTok sensation who blew up on the social app in 2020 by making a dance video to Goya Menor’s “Ameno” song. Aside from wearing almost purple-only clothes and dancing, she’s also known for acting, lip-syncing and skitmaking on TikTok. Ending the year with over 14.5 million TikTok followers, she also received a TikTok Influencer Award for 2024.

    The future is a living testament to the bold actions we celebrate today, a belief embodied by The Future Awards Africa (TFAA) for the past 18 years.     While each award category held its own intrigue, the Prize for Content Creation for the year 2024, sponsored by Infinix, stood out as one of the evening’s most eagerly anticipated honours. Young creators have redefined entertainment, enriching our digital screens with thought-provoking stories and powerful messages. Recognising this impactful influence, Infinix took pride in sponsoring the category, spotlighting the creators who push boundaries in creative digital content.

    The crowd’s anticipation was rewarded when Layi Wasabi emerged as the winner for the Prize for Content Creation for the year 2024. It was a powerful full-circle moment for Layi, who reflected on how his journey began with an Infinix smartphone that he once used to capture and share his early work. Winning this award and receiving the new Infinix Zero Flip, along with a cash prize of N1,000,000, represented a milestone in his career and a testament to Infinix’s support of Africa’s creative dreamers.

    As the event drew to a close, many attendees left inspired, and eager to see what’s next from Infinix as the brand continues to support Africa’s dynamic young creators.   • 22-year-old Layi Wasabi, born Olayiwola Isaac, is one of Nigeria’s most popular digital content creators. On the night of May 11, 2024, he won an Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA), the annual show that awards excellence in African cinema and television.

    Since he went viral in 2021 for his skits on social media, Layi Wasabi has come to take a seat at the mainstream table. This is a timeline of his journey.

    2021: Layi Wasabi started creating content 

    In December 2021, Layi was a law undergraduate at Bowen University when his comedy video about blocking your mum from viewing your WhatsApp status went viral, thanks to Instagram bloggers like YabaLeftOnline and Tunde Ednut. Since then, he has launched popular video characters like Professor, The Law, Officer Robert and Life Coach.

    2022: Brand partnerships and cashing out

    Throughout the year, he made viral videos with his comedy characters. He was also featured in various paid campaigns with big brands like Chicken Republic, Flutterwave, Laughing Out Loud Naija, Ladipoe, and Trophy Lager beer.

    June 2023: Management deal

    On June 23, 2023, Layi Wasabi went from handling his content creation business to being signed to Penzaaraville Africa, a talent management company known for working with brands like Bolt, Red Bull and Wema Bank 

    July 2023: Layi at Trendupp Awards

    Layi won the Emerging Force award at the 2023 Trendupp Awards, an award ceremony for Nigeria’s digital content creators. 

    September 2023: Revelation of the Year

    Layi caught the attention of the Wale Adenuga Production’s Nigerian Comedy Awards and won their Revelation of the Year award. The same month, he was nominated for The Future Awards Africa’s Content Creation prize.

    February 2024: “Anikulapo” announcement 

    On February 1, 2024, Layi Wasabi announced on his page that he would star in the TV series spin-off of Kunle Afolayan’s hit movie, “Anikulapo”.

    March 2024: Meta’s Creators of Tomorrow and AMVCA nomination

    On March 14, Layi was among the five Nigerian content creators selected by the Instagram and Meta communities. 11 days later, Layi was nominated for Best Digital Content Creator at the 2024 African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

    May 2024: Layi won an AMVCA

    The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) is among the biggest African film awards. In its 10th edition, Layi Wasabi won the Best Digital Content Creator award.
