We asked Lagos-based couples about their favourite staycation spots, and their recommendations are proof that you can enjoy a proper holiday without catching flights outside the city. 

Lakowe Lakes

Seun, 35

My wife and I went to Lakowe for our fifth anniversary. It was supposed to be just us, but we wanted the kids to experience it too, so we made it a family getaway. We spent over ₦1 million, but it was money well spent. It felt like we were in a different world, and everyone on WhatsApp kept asking where we were. It wasn’t until I shared the name of the place weeks later that people realised we were still in Lagos. Many thought we’d travelled out of the country.

Marriott Hotel Ikeja

We spent two nights at the Marriott Hotel Ikeja last year, and for those two days, I could’ve convinced anyone I was out of the country. There were expatriates coming and going, and even some of our pictures had white people in the background. The service was top-notch, and we had the buffet at Koriko and Ko. I’d really wanted us to visit an African country, but this wasn’t a bad alternative.

La Campagne Tropicana Resort

I surprised my girlfriend with a staycation at La Campagne, and it was perfect. The ambience was amazing, and there were so many activities to explore in the resort. The vibes were tropical and it felt like we were in Namibia.

Nordic Hotel Lagos

Even though it’s in the middle of Victoria Island, the atmosphere was surprisingly secluded. We spent most of our time enjoying the soft music and relaxing by the beautiful poolside. The rooms are artistic and cosy, and the breakfast spread was so good that we barely needed to buy anything else. It was such a relaxing experience, and definitely somewhere I’d love to visit again.

Yolo Island Resort

My boyfriend and I visited Yolo because we needed to get away from the stress of Lagos. The further we went on the speedboat, the more relaxed I got. Once we arrived, the peaceful atmosphere and scenic views made it easy to switch off. We spent the day swimming and relaxing, and it was definitely worth it.

Isimi Lagos

My wife and I spent a night at Isimi, and it felt like stepping into the world of wealthy people. It was the greenest I’d seen in Lagos. It’s so eco-friendly that only electric cars and bicycles are allowed on the estate. I stayed in the Nature’s Cottage, which was surrounded by nature-inspired architecture. We even forgot we were still in Lagos at one point. There are more perks with the private membership, so I can’t wait to get my money up and experience them.

Sencillo Lagos

Sencillo is still one of my favourite places. I really loved the unique, white Mediterranean-inspired design and the ocean views. I also liked how secluded it felt compared to most beaches, so you can actually have some privacy and enjoy a quiet stay with your partner.

Avista Beach Resort

My husband and I booked the Top Shell Villa, and the view was amazing. I also loved the poolside vibe in the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would definitely recommend it for couples who want to bond and enjoy some alone time together.

Havara Stay

I loved the picturesque views and scenery at the beachfront. It felt like a home away from home, but with full-service private luxury. The staff were also friendly and top-notch. I went there with friends, but I’ll definitely be going back with my boyfriend.

Ziba Beach Resort

When I went with my babe, I realised it was worth the hype. There were so many activities that didn’t require leaving the resort. I took so many aesthetic pictures that someone could easily assume I’d gone to Zanzibar.
