You’ll Understand This If You Were A Day Student In A Nigerian Boarding School

I put it to you that in Nigerian secondary schools no group of people are more marginalized than day students in a  day and boarding school. As if just being in secondary school is not stressful enough, you have to deal with all the wahala that comes with being a day student in a Nigerian boarding school.

When you innocently come to school in the morning only to find out that boarders had misbehaved the night before and the whole school has to serve punishment.

Nobody will remember that day students weren’t there oh.

They’ll be making announcements in the morning and all the announcements will be for boarders.

Day students nko?

When you hear them announcing socials for a Saturday.

Saturday that you’ll be sweeping your mother’s house. Where is the justice?

After sitting in double period Maths class, you’ll bring out the jollof your mum cooked for you to eat and the next thing you know, ten boarders have joined you.

If you don’t give then now they’ll say you are stingy. You’ll now go home hungry.

If you had ten naira for everytime a boarder asked you ‘why are you even a day student sef’, you’ll be Dangote’s senior.

Is it by force to be a boarder or what?

There’s always inside gist that boarders like to keep from day students.

When you ask them for the gist they’ll start acting like it’s a national secret.

You can’t come to school and go back home in peace without one boarder asking you to help them buy something.

Every single day as if your middle name is Shop Rite. Even the ones that don’t know your name will ask you.

This was your face the first time you went to the boarding house area to see what all the hype was about.

So it’s fetching water and sleeping in heat you people have been shouting about.

You don’t even know why they bother sharing day students into houses for Inter House Sports.

When it’s only the boarders that really participate.

When they are choosing prefects in SS3, out of 30, 28 will be boarders and 2 will be day students.

Where is the representation??

Day students always have the responsibility of bringing what the whole class needs for a project.

Where am I supposed to go and find 4 rabbits and 5 frogs now? What kind of nonsense is this?

But it wasn’t all bad though. Remember how you’ll lie to seniors that you are a boarder when they want to punish you?

By the time they are going from dorm to dorm to look for you, you’ll be in your father’s house eating Jollof.
