Is there anything worse than having an irregular menstrual cycle? Scratch that, is there anything worse than having an irregular menstrual cycle and being sexually active.

Irregular menstrual cycles

We’ll give you five minutes to think.

Irregular Menstrual cycles occur when the usual 24 -28 day rule doesn’t apply to certain women or having a period outside of the known 2 – 8 day period.

Stress.

Hormonal birth control pills.

Hormonal birth control pills and Intrauterine devices (IUDs) can cause irregular bleeding. Same with birth control pills. It’s all a part of the territory.

Endometriosis.

This is a condition where the tissue that usually lines the uterus grows outside of it, causing prolonged and painful periods, together with heavy bleeding.

Being overweight.

Because obesity can affect hormone and insulin levels, this can lead to an interference with the menstrual cycle.

Extreme weight loss and eating disorders.

Excessive/rapid weight loss can cause your period to stop. Same with not consuming enough calories. This can prevent your body from producing hormones necessary for ovulation.

Treatments For Irregular Menstrual Cycles.

There’s no hard and fast rule to treating irregular periods as treatment usually depends on the cause of the irregularity.

Your doctor may advise a change of contraceptives or an improved method where contraception is to blame. Improved eating habits where that causes irregular menstrual cycles or stress-relieving exercises where stress is to be blamed.

Bottom line, you should see a doctor if your periods become too irregular and start to be a cause of worry. Zikoko always has the best advice and articles for you.
